I am glad (I say ironically) that you, Phyllo, Rick and others believe you have it all figured out and can pronounce judgments about what is happening, why, and what it means and portends. Your reactions are both typical and understandable as well.

Myself, I am suspicious of mere reaction. And it is a mood that is also exploited by media-systems. I do not have the clarity at this point to pronounce judgments quite so easily. I am unsure what “authoritative opinion” does have that clarity.

In regard to Vance: your opinion of him doesn’t matter much. Those like you solely involved in reaction and exaggerated rhetoric certainly hate him and will continue to hate him. It is a further manifestation of TDS but reapplied, no?

What does matter are those who “relate” to him, as one from their side of the street as it were, who made his way into the governing structure. His background is fascinating from any perspective (obviously with exception to you-plural).

It very much remains to be seen how the ideas that Vance and others are working with play out in American (and European) politics.

Better to try to understand the causal chain that produced the circumstances that “brought forth” the phenomenon of Trump and the phenomena of similarly powered political movements in our present, in America, in Europe.

And also to understand the nature of a dramatic political battle both visible and tras bambalinas. The immense power-struggles are perhaps the most relevant while the superficially visible war is chaotic, confusing, hard to sort out and figure out.

Consolidation of power into one hand could theoretically result positively. For example in Abe Lincoln’s semi-dictatorship. How one assesses that concentration of power depends on what side one supports, no? You would perhaps support a strongman if that man were enacting policy you believed was right and necessary.

Many believe, rightly or wrongly, that America requires “saving” and that bold, authoritative action is needed. That is not my opinion it is what they think.
