Anyway, back to the topic of the post: I think it's interesting that conservatives in America have managed to convince themselves they're the party of freedom and the other side is the party of censorship. I think both sides have some unhealthy tendencies lately towards domineering control of language, and controlling what beliefs people are allowed to express. It seems to me to be a myth that American conservatives are genuinely much more freedom oriented than American liberals. I'm not certain exactly which side is worse on the freedom scale, but Trump hasn't been helping the conservative side of that tug-of-war

That may be so, if he's really banned those words. Still, some of them, such as "chestfeeding" are abominations, and highly offensive.Flannel Jesus wrote: ↑Sun Mar 09, 2025 10:39 amAnyway, back to the topic of the post: I think it's interesting that conservatives in America have managed to convince themselves they're the party of freedom and the other side is the party of censorship. Are people losing their jobs and livelihoods for using any of those words? If so, then yes, both sides are equally bad.

I think a lot of those weren't actually doing anything, or very little. Still, I don't want to make light of the issue. We're always being threatened with council cut backs where I work, and it's not much fun.Flannel Jesus wrote: ↑Sun Mar 09, 2025 10:50 amNot yet. No, people lost their jobs in the big doge purge a few weeks ago.
Re: how woke works
I read that the military banned the word "gay", so all mention of the Enola Gay (the B52 that dropped the first atomic bomb) was expunged from military history sites.

As I understand it, those were the ones they sacked, by and large. It's just what I've heard on the news, though.mickthinks wrote: ↑Mon Mar 10, 2025 12:09 pmInteresting! I take that to mean you have assumed that DOGE has taken great care to assess the productivity of every federal employee it has sacked. Taking that as a premise, it would follow readily that being fired is firm evidence of an employee’s idleness.Maia wrote: ↑Mon Mar 10, 2025 1:15 pm

But why do you assume that DOGE is taking great care to assess the productivity of all these federal employees? I‘ve seen and heard nothing that supports such an assumption.

I don't know, to be honest, and perhaps I'm not quite as familiar with American domestic politics as I should be. Elon Musk is has undoubtedly helped human progress, but I suppose it's hardly rocket science.mickthinks wrote: ↑Mon Mar 10, 2025 9:09 pmI take that to mean you have assumed that DOGE has taken great care to assess the productivity of every federal employee it has sacked. I don't believe so, and when I've asked about things like that in the past, they've always denied it. I very much like to think that I was able to get the job on my own merits.
