Why, in your view, would it (only) refer to what was in Plato's mind, per how Plato thought about it?Skepdick wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 3:08 pmIt amounts to everything.Terrapin Station wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 2:11 pm What in the world does "meaning is holistic" amount to?
You don't know what platonic forms are either. You aren't Plato.Terrapin Station wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 2:11 pm I don't want to move on to something else other than your confusion about what platonic forms are at the moment.
So lets focus on why you think my interpretation is "confused" and yours isn't.

Seems you've misunderstood my objection.Terrapin Station wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 3:11 pm Why, in your view, would it (only) refer to what was in Plato's mind, per how Plato thought about it?
When it comes to "confusion" about the theory of forms, the least confused person in the history of humanity was Plato himself.
Maker's knowledge, not user's knowledge.
Unfortunately, synchronous communication with Plato is not possible, so neither of us could improve on our "confusion" any further (I won't bore you with the technical details of the Mathematical theory of Communication and error correction)
And since Plato is not here to adjudicate this dick-swinging contest either, it's also rather pointless insisting that your (mis?)interpretation of Plato's theory is "not confused", but mine is.

You said that I don't know what platonic forms are either because I'm not Plato. Why would being Plato be required to know what platonic forms are?Skepdick wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 3:16 pmSeems you've misunderstood my objection.Terrapin Station wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 3:11 pm Why, in your view, would it (only) refer to what was in Plato's mind, per how Plato thought about it?

Since you are equivocating "knowledge"... no, it's not required.Terrapin Station wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 3:23 pm You said that I don't know what platonic forms are either because I'm not Plato. Why would being Plato be required to know what platonic forms are?
I know what they are.
You know what they are.
You think I am mistaken.
Ditto.

Which part seems impossible to you?Terrapin Station wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 3:29 pm How is this possible on your holistic view of meaning?
That's not holistic.Terrapin Station wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 3:29 pm You think that shape implies platonic form, because one sense of "form" is "shape."

That's not holistic.
Re: What is P and -P?
It isn't?
So it's transcendental?

OK, but I told you I intended it to be counted as an answer, so you seem wee bit dismissive.Terrapin Station wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 3:45 pm Which I don't count as answering. Hence "You didn't answer."

Yes, I'm dismissive if it doesn't count as an answer to me. Your intention wouldn't matter there. You didn't answer.Skepdick wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 3:47 pmOK, but I told you I intended it to be counted as an answer, so you seem wee bit dismissive.Terrapin Station wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 3:45 pm Which I don't count as answering.
