Re: Hubris and Hillary Clinton
That sense of American superiority is in a major downward trend in any event and more so within the U.S. itself. Military power is no longer the most salient measure of a superpower. But whatever anyone wishes to say about it, it is and likely remain for years to come the first among equals. Who's there to replace it? Europe, the UK, Russia or China, all basket cases in themselves! The world is so screwed up that anything less so wins the geopolitical prize. The US would again become a superpower if they start to self-analyze and re-balance from within instead of presenting themselves as if they were still masters of the world while pathetically proving to everyone that they're anything but.

I think it's more that he understands Americans really well. Who cares about what's true or not anyway? Practically no one, as far as I can tell.Hobbes' Choice wrote:

Is it ordained in a dusty archive somewhere that the world must have a 'Supreme Superpower' at all times? We have to just put up with America's need to be constantly 'at war' with some imaginary enemy because someone else might be even worse?Dubious wrote:That sense of American superiority is in a major downward trend in any event and more so within the U.S. itself. I don't know of any period in history when there wasn't a superstate somewhere in spite of not always having fully succeeded or burning out rather quickly like the Assyrians.vegetariantaxidermy wrote:Is it ordained in a dusty archive somewhere that the world must have a 'Supreme Superpower' at all times?
...and that is the point! If America would start retracting its tentacles from across the globe realizing what a catastrophe its been not only for themselves but for a world that no longer invites their involvement - since the aftermath is always worse wherever they interfere - then conceivably they may begin to empower themselves instead of distributing that power which at best has accomplished nothing or, as stated, resulted in making the situation much worse. The Americans throughout all the wars of the 20th century heading into the 21st were never geopolitically sophisticated or astute in any of their actions or reactions. They were instead corrupt bully boys with a John Wayne mentality who were playing games of political chess without ever arriving at a checkmate. How long does it take to learn the lessons of history that one was an integral part of? Want to be a superpower? Make war on the corruption of your own country. We have to just put up with America's need to be constantly 'at war' with some imaginary enemy because someone else might be even worse?

We used to call it 'empires'. Surely we will eventually grow up?Dubious wrote: I don't know of any period in history when there wasn't a superstate somewhere in spite of not always having fully succeeded or burning out rather quickly like the Assyrians.

That depends on how much "room" by way of time and potential there's left in human nature to grow. Not hopeful on that but why would I even care!vegetariantaxidermy wrote:We used to call it 'empires'. I don't know why you would care, or not care. I can't speak for others.Dubious wrote:That depends on how much "room" by way of time and potential there's left in human nature to grow. It means the dominant country, like a dominant animal in a pack that takes the best resources for itself and who can control and dictate the actions of other nations.vegetariantaxidermy wrote:I don't see why any country has to be 'The Superpower'. What does it mean? The country that spends the most on weapons and spends the most amount of time meddling and invading due to its paranoia and innate sense of its own 'superiority'? I don't see that any other country comes within light years of the US in those respects.

It was a rhetorical question. I'm well aware of the behaviour of the US.Greta wrote:It means the dominant country, like a dominant animal in a pack that takes the best resources for itself and who can control and dictate the actions of other nations.vegetariantaxidermy wrote:I don't see why any country has to be 'The Superpower'. In other words we haven't evolved at all.

That too was a rhetorical question being implied with an exclamation instead of a question mark.vegetariantaxidermy wrote:I don't know why you would care, or not care. Re: Hubris and Hillary Clinton
Why would you expect to see any evolution in a few hundred years or even a few thousand. Evolution happens over many thousands or millions of years and the only "purpose" is reproduction. If you have no children you are not part of the next generation and are not part of evolution. FYI, humans have evolved and are still evolving, but individual humans do not live long enough to see any change and there have not been enough generations in historic times to record any evolutionary change. Evolution doesn't happen because some people think we can be better, evolution happens when those who reproduce more, produce the next generation, and they are not college professors.vegetariantaxidermy wrote:It was a rhetorical question.
