Italy launched the first aircraft, the inventors name was Leonardo di Vinci.

It did not so much "launch" as plummet.

Many of his "inventions" though way ahead of their time did not actually work being made from material that were too crude.
His diving suit would have worked, but his aircraft never got off the ground, and his tank would have been almost impossible to move without an engine.

That's not the question. The question is could those so called leaps have been made by those individuals if it weren't for the foundation that others laid down before them?
