Is there a God? If so, what is She like?

?? primarily for atheists, but all comments welcome.....

Post by melonkali »

I'm probably phrasing this query poorly, but I hope I'm communicating the general idea behind it. All observations/experience/knowledge/comments welcome, from "believers" and "non-believers" alike.

Do most atheists/agnostics, particularly the atheists/agnostics in this forum, oppose or disregard all ideas about "god(s)" or "supernatural" or any concept of "divinity" or "spirit/soul" or anything not part of the natural world, any concepts or ideas or things that are neither rational nor objectively verifiable? Do you accept some things that might be described as subjective (for example, personal ethics, aesthetics, etc), if so, what? And do you view such personally accepted ideas/things as subjective/relative or absolute truth? And any other obvious aspect of this query I've left out or mis-stated. Thanks.

It really doesn't matter what you believe because it's all meaningless. From a scientific viewpoint, we are the result of 4 billion years of evolution. All organized religions are the result of the ignorance and superstitions of the past. The very idea of people "worshipping" a God is remarkable, as though any God would have a human-type ego needing to be constantly stroked by his creations. Most of mankind in this 21st century is certainly quite pathetic.

I am an atheist, and reject all notions of the supernatural. However, I accept many things that are subjective, like my feelings of pain, or that of another person. One cannot have knowledge of the supernatural, but there are many subjective things I accept.

If an event happens rarely, it is dismissed by most people and considered a lie, superstition, or illusion. If it happens frequently, it is considered natural.

The only difference between natural and supernatural is our ability to observe it. I'm not so foolish as to restrict the power of the universe to our power of observation. It sounds presumptuous.

I am an atheist. I cannot see the need for two separate 'realms'; the natural and the supernatural.
Most of those things previously regarded as supernatural have now been shown to obey the same laws as everything else. There are still a lot of things that behave in ways our tiny brains can't quite get a handle on; (eg some problems in quantum physics; some aspects of consciousness) but that doesn't mean they really are independent of the natural laws; it just means that we can't quite see how they work. At least we can't see it yet.
And in some cases we might never be able to understand, because that would require a different brain structure. (Think about the fact that bonobo apes can't understand how earthquakes happen.) Some processes may always be too hard for us to properly understand.
. OK, so we're not omniscient. So what? Occam's razor can still apply here. No need to suppose an entire extra realm of reality called 'the supernatural'.

I’m an Atheist, however I prefer Adeist since Theology most definitely (Look on every other corner - a million dollar cry to Sky Guy) does exist but meaningful god/devil thingys do not.

If there is a CreaTOR, considering all the wasted effort trying to get Sky Guy Horton to hear us - perhaps such a beast exists, we are the leftover crap, the
non-eternal junk, from the formation of the realm of the everlasting.
This would cause our universe to be a perfectly oscillating one – in other words – once the universe ends (Big Chill or Crunch matters not) we would simply reform, as this universal junkyark, and repeat exactly as before.
Is this the first time we’ve been doing this to the quadrillionth googolplex trip? Amusingly enough, that answer could NEVER be know but..... it does take the ‘Fun’ outta funeral :?

Oft times, when tools such mathematics, break down – as in singularities and at quantum levels - we have only imagination and philosophy to work with. These can be MOST telling. One of the finest examples of this is the search, by Crick and Watson, etc., for the structure of life/DNA.
They looked, peered, sought, peeked, and pondered that formation and ALL of the time the double helix was staring them right in the eye.

So if there is a god/satan thingy, we cannot get there, it can not hear us, it doesn’t want to hear us if it could – we've been left/put and daddy/mommy ain’t coming back – we ARE home.

Now, let's eat each other or something else 'cause the universe, of which we are one and the same, couldn't care in the least one/any/all/no ways IF.....we don't.

SOGS,
 Tor
