Suicide
Here discuss suicide, both unassisted and assisted. With the latter comes issues of how much assistance is permissible.

Re: Suicide

Re: Suicide
If someone is dying of an incurable disease in which the final stages will be excruciatingly painful, would it also be "murder" for someone to (upon request by the one dying) hand them the means to painlessly end their life prematurely, and/or explain to them how to painlessly end their life prematurely? If so, then it sounds like Canada should stop the MAID program entirely. End of story.

Re: Suicide
then the internet itself as well as medical libraries all over the world are guilty as well - information is a funny thingGary Childress wrote: ↑Wed Jun 17, 2026 3:04 pmIf someone is dying of an incurable disease in which the final stages will be excruciatingly painful, would it also be "murder" for someone to (upon request by the one dying) hand them the means to painlessly end their life prematurely, and/or explain to them how to painlessly end their life prematurely? Re: Suicide
I like to envision a future where people are allowed and enabled to end their lives whenever they want to after some sort of reasonably short process that assures that they have no interest in any other options.
It is outrageous that religion interferes and tells people-not-of-that-religion what is right and wrong, and what they can and cannot do.
Allow people the dignity of deciding for themselves whether or not their life experience is something they want to do. It is completely within our ability to compassionately assist them with their decision.

Maybe we could first start with a future where people aren't killing each other?Impenitent wrote: ↑Wed Jun 17, 2026 6:45 pm I'd like to envision a future world where people have no desire to kill themselves

Re: Suicide
Would it? ANY assistance?
A wants to kill him/herself but is bedridden. B brings a bottle containing 100 5 mg oxycodone tablets to where A can reach. Or B brings a loaded pistpl and puts within A's reach. ETC.
When these days we talk of assisted suicide we usually mean more direct assistance in the process than just making it possible dor the person to commit suicide.
NOTE -- discussing if murder, not whether other laws might be violated, like giving a firearm and ammunition to a person without a firearms license (my jurisdiction)
Re: Suicide
Dream on! The vulnerabilities of mortality, physical, mental or simply based on circumstances, don't always allow for an option or one seemingly forthcoming. If free will exists to any degree, the totally conscious decision to live or die would be its ultimate manifestation requiring no justification, especially to anything institutional such as religion or to those sanctimonious enough to believe a life is sacred merely by virtue of being human.Impenitent wrote: ↑Wed Jun 17, 2026 6:45 pm I'd like to envision a future world where people have no desire to kill themselves

In the future, it wouldn't surprise if there were MAID clinics insisting only on a short interview prior to permanent closing.

I never said they couldn't or wouldn't... having no desire is a state of mindDubious wrote: ↑Thu Jun 18, 2026 12:36 amDream on! Re: Suicide
Was there ever a human with the capacity to think who didn't give thought to suicide and what happens after?
Probably not.
