The Case Against Suicide
The Case Against Suicide
I guess this is a good a place as any.
I’ve struggled to find a good argument against suicide that doesn’t involve either nonsense or special pleading to life or hindsight bias.
The way I see it if there is no greater reason to meaning to life then there isn’t really a reason to keep going. Not reason to really struggle and fight for a place in the world. No reason to really pursue anything. One can just end their life and be done with the pursuit and struggle.
To me arguments for staying alive or for meaning only work if you HAVE to live. Filling life with good things, doing what you love, all that junk only has logical weight if one is unable to die until a set time. Baring that I see no reason for living. Desire for pleasures only applies if you are alive, if you die there is no need for any of that. Same with love, friendship, food, money, etc.

Re: The Case Against Suicide
The problem with suicide is reincarnation. The fact that you learn so much up to a point in time, decide to end it because you've had such a hard time of it and see no future happiness - so you blow your head off with a 12gauge only to be reborn again.Darkneos wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2024 5:02 pm I guess this is a good a place as any.

Again, having to learn all over again, all the same shit but worse this time, because you have no wisdom from the previous life carried over.
Suicide? I gave GOD a decent chance to blip me out of existence, but I awoke in my bed, it was a new day. (* and I had to get my car battery re charged)
NOW? LIFE IS GREAT!

..he/she/it indirectly asked the Evening Star.
Re: The Case Against Suicide
I beg to differ, if there is no reason to live then death is the natural follow up.
Reincarnation isn't real, not that I believe it in it either way.attofishpi wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2024 5:17 pmThe problem with suicide is reincarnation. Maybe if your website wasn't nonsense I would take it more seriously...attofishpi wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2024 5:32 pmBy the way, wots your preferred method?

I don't really have a preferred method, I haven't decided yet on that matter. But so far the reasons to keep living just have nothing but fallacies to support them.

C'mon, u must have a top 3.Darkneos wrote:I don't really have a preferred method, I haven't decided yet on that matter. But so far the reasons to keep living just have nothing but fallacies to support them.
Mine are:-
1. Carbon Monoxide poisoning after a packet of sleeping pills and lots of alcohol (* tried it, awoke in bed and had no idea how I got there, the car had rolled down and hit the shed)
2. Angle-Grinder to the jugular vein. (I don't like the idea of slitting with a knife)
3. Shotgun to blow atto's beautiful head off.
Re: The Case Against Suicide
You mean besides the intro page? I figured that speaks for itself. What is nonsensical about my website?
I knew this forum attracted crazies because there is no moderation, maybe this is a bad place for a serious discussion.

Re: The Case Against Suicide
Oh, you mean the stuff about GOD and declaring I am certified "schizophrenic"..
So, ya just skimmed it..your faith in atheism so strong. Care to reveal your age?
PS. Dude, it doesn't get much more serious as discussion than ending your life.

Logic is only good for certain tasks, primarily related to maintaining consistency between the various things we consider to be facts and the things we consider inviolable principles.Darkneos wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2024 5:02 pm To me arguments for staying alive or for meaning only work if you HAVE to live. But I don't think there's any combination of those things that works to require us to choose life for any particular reason. It's either one of the basic assumptions we hold before we start doing logic, or it's arbitrary. It's not something to be discovered via logic.

That, among others. The whole AI nonsense for starters…attofishpi wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2024 5:52 pmOh, you mean the stuff about GOD and declaring I am certified "schizophrenic"..

Atheism isn’t a faith claim so you’re already off on the wrong step and I’m not about digging through crazy. Either state your case briefly or I’m moving on. No one got time for that.
Re: The Case Against Suicide
Maybe. I guess since it’s a want logic doesn’t really work out here. Just because someone doesn’t want to keep living doesn’t really make it logical to just die.FlashDangerpants wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2024 5:57 pmLogic is only good for certain tasks, primarily related to maintaining consistency between the various things we consider to be facts and the things we consider inviolable principles.Darkneos wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2024 5:02 pm To me arguments for staying alive or for meaning only work if you HAVE to live. Maybe the concept of wanting something still eludes me. In my mind if I don’t have to do something then I don’t do it. The concept of want to me feels weaker than a need.
