This painting is from the archway of Notre Dame where I spent a couple of days whilst investigating Paris for my novel Alpha Two

The door-jamb statues represent on the left St. Bartholomew, St. Simon, St. James the Less, St. Andrew, St. John and St. Peter,
and on the right St. Paul, St. James the Greater, St. Thomas, St. Philip, St. Jude and St. Matthew.
* this is the left door-jamb
I found it very interesting the way the Saints are represented, particularly:-
-- the one holding the book is staring at the observer
-- the fourth from the left has a shroud over his arm as if concealing something
-- the gargoyles looking up at the Saints are all staring in different directions at the Saints above
Truly the artist mason or whoever designed the masonry truly knew something they wanted to convey.
In 1793, during the French Revolution, the cathedral was rededicated to the Cult of Reason,
and then to the Cult of the Supreme Being. During this time, many of the treasures of the cathedral were either destroyed or plundered.
