For all things philosophical.

Why is Euclidean geometry called synthetic?

Post by anatolewilson »

Why is Euclidean geometry synthetic and Cartesian geometry analytic? Both seem a priori to me. In that case, shouldn't both be called analytic? What exactly is it about Cartesian geometry that differentiates it from Euclidean geometry? Can anyone explain it to me in layman's terms? I'm not a student of philosophy.
