First you'd have to define "significance".Philosophy Now wrote: βWed Jun 05, 2024 9:57 am Ruben David Azevedo tells us why, in a limitless universe, weβre not insignificant.

Well in my view, significance is a subjective term, thus there needs to be an observer to "give" something that description. Thus the vastness of the universe is irrelevant to most of the individuals who grant that label, as they perceive themselves to exist within a much smaller environment. Of course, one can stipulate that the label must be judged relative to the universe, which is a common psychological "trick" to encourage the overly anxious to relax through broadening their scope. Elementary stuff in that field.werules12 wrote: βThu Jun 06, 2024 4:24 am Hey LuckyR,
Good point, defining "significance" is crucial to understanding Ruben David Azevedo's argument. For me, significance means that our actions and existence have meaning and impact, whether on a personal, societal, or even universal level.
In an infinite universe, it's easy to feel small and insignificant, but Azevedo shows that our ability to reflect, create, and connect with others gives us a special role. It's our perspective and actions that give us meaning, regardless of the vastness of the universe around us.
What do you think? Does that make sense to you?
