a universal morality/ethics...

Post by Peter Kropotkin »

as I have argued against the possibility of
a universal ethics/morality,
(in the information.. it limited use thread)

which means I am suggesting that morals/ethics are ''ad hoc" temporary,
of the moment...the ancient Greeks for example didn't seem to
have any such "Moral" laws against cross-dressing... but looking
at the Greek clothes, the way they dressed, there wasn't a whole
lot of difference between what men wore and what women wore...
I am sure the Greeks could tell the difference, but us modern's,
I am not so sure we could tell the difference between men's clothing
and women's clothing in ancient Greece...

as human beings are limited in their knowledge and awareness,
what might pass as a "immoral" illegal action today, may in fact,
be legal and even necessary in the future...

we cannot predict what will be moral or immoral in the future...as
our idea's of moral/immoral seems to function as a part of the
current environment we live under today...

as there doesn't seem to be any possibility of a moral law being
a universal law.. as Kant might think it to be.... morals/ethics
is ''ad hoc", of the moment... and we should think of morals/ethics as
being "ad hoc", of the moment.. and not universal.... being where
everyone, everywhere, at every time must follow a certain set of
rules and laws about what is moral and what is immoral...
as those rules and laws are of the moment, not universal,
we discover that morality/ethics is temporary... not
applicable to everyone, everywhere, at all times...

so, what does this do to your values and ethics/morals?

if the values you hold to be the highest values possible values,
are just ''ad hoc", then what values can you believe in, that are true
and universal?

is justice as a value, a universal value? is truth found universally,
is love a universal value? what values that we can hold,
what values are known to be universal/for everyone, at all times,
in all places?

for example, Christian values are meant for Christians, they
are not universal.. do Christian values have any meaning
for someone who is Chinese, or someone in ancient Greece?

and so on what basis can we find, what value, that will allow us to
hold ethics/morals as a universal value? I can't see any possibility
of a value being universal...

and now what?

Have a word with Veritas Aquitas; he'll sort you out with one of his marvellous FSKs.

With the right FSK, anything is possible.

Many seem to believe that the basis for "morality" is "what was" and/or "what is". In your case, you also consider "what might be". The only thing that matters is "what ought to be". "What was", "what is", speculation about "what might be" are irrelevant. No wonder you and others are so confused.
