for me, the question is....

Post by Peter Kropotkin »

in terms of evolution, the only question I have is this,
how did consciousness begin? How did the concept
of being "self-aware" begin? what was the process that
allow us to become conscious, self-aware?

as far, as we can tell, we are the only species, that is conscious,
self-aware of itself...we create mental concepts like good, evil,
love, justice... but what is a "tree" for example, conscious of?
is it conscious of its leaves being green? or is it conscious of
that mental construct, birds, being in its leaves?
or what is ''Fido" conscious of? Is "fido" self-aware
of the concepts of good or evil or justice?
no, ''Fido" has no sense of good or evil or justice..
"Fido" is aware of its needs, food and water, and that sense
of belonging that only a dog can offer....
cats, not so much....nor do trees have that sense of belonging....
and even that sense of belonging, that is a human construct...

"I want more beer!"

"Me too!"

"Well, if you want more beer, we need more ...?"

" more ... nah! That can't be it!"

"What can't be it?!"

"Look at the table silly!"

"What's there on the table?!"

"A newspaper, a lighter, an empty lighter, spilled tomato sauce, cans of beer, 9 of them, a packet of cigarettes, open, a dot pen, that's all I see."

"Ergo, we need more ...?"

"We need more ... er ... Texans in Sarajevo?! I don't know!"

"God has given each one of us ...?"

"To hell with this!"

"Amen!"
