Could someone explain how an online 'bot' works with regard to interacting with humans? What are the logistics of this? Could AI bots be infiltrating random internet forums? I would have thought that a philosophy site would be something they would home in on.

Which forum members would you say are 'bots' and why?

These are the members I would vote for in the 'most likely to be a bot' award :

1. Dattaswami (ahead by a mile)
2. Age
3. Walker
4. Immanuel Can
5. Promethean (could anyone be that cartoonishly openly loathesome?)

None of these come across as human. Thoughts?

Although, on the positive side, none of these apparent bots appear to know very much about anything.

Most likely...
1) Training the bots/AIs.
But then there could be political goals...
2) Disruption
3) Breaking social ties by undermining online communities (even more)
4) Polarizing the public - when you deal with bot-like entities, the communication is less than satisifying - if the bots are created to be not-great communicators or it's simply what they are capable of so far - or if it is merely the humans who seem like bots - you get subtle to not so subtle trolling. Blunt trolling, which humans do, is fairly easy to deal with. Subtle trolling, where bots/humans respond, but not well, not really to points made, with a great deal of repetition and so on, leads to frustration, anger, people leaving (Pattern Chaseer a recent one). We get it with regular trolls. They want you pissed off. You can engage or not. Truth in advertising. More subtle trolling whether bot or human, is easier to fall for. It can look more like a discussion, when it isn't. So, this leads to more tension, more polarization, less functional discussion, more distractions from real problems, less outlets for information and so on.

Many actors on the world stage who have power could think this would help them with their goals.

I have no knowledge that there are bots pretending to be humans here, but it wouldn't surprise me.
Further there are a whole lot of youtube videos, for example, that use English in odd ways, or that seem a bit randomly clipped together AND have a good deal of money behind the production. I've wondered if those are AI/bot produced.

Sure, and that's a fairly easy heuristic to toss into the programming.

For example, Christian-Hater Bots attack Christians with all kinds of mean and nasty names.

And Christian bots dangle themselves into to conversations to trigger non-Christians and anti-christian bots.

Some of the fights may be inter-bot.

I'd say more, disrupting anything. Not that I'm committed to the bot disruption scenario, but I do see similar patterns in other media that are not bot dependent, so I figure, hey, why not.

Why polarize the right and left? To get them to focus on certain things and not others? Why get people to fight? If they fight each other and 'things' without much power, then they will not fight that which has a lot of power.
