Question
Question
I applied for an MA program and was rejected for acting like a "know it all". Thanks to good old fashioned pulling strings I found out I may now be accepted.
Assuming I will not be rejected again for some unknown reason, I went through the masters thesis requirements and found that thesis can only be seventy five pages.
The question occurs, for those who read anything I wrote, what subject matter do you find interesting? Keep in mind this is all subjective opinion and while I will probably not listen to it I will still keep it in memory as a thought.
Thoughts? (Keep in mind it is a more traditionally oriented school).

Re: Question
My thesis is on the subject of “Nobody gives a fuck”. All 85 pages of it. The feedback from my supervisor is about formatting and presentation not content (which in reality fits on 5 pages so I am stretching cheese like I am making pizza).Eodnhoj7 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 05, 2018 4:57 am I applied for an MA program and was rejected for acting like a "know it all". So I am an expert at LaTeX! Because I don’t know enough markup languages already.
Just write the paper and make it pretty. Unless you are in a field that tends to generalise/transpose easily Academia is a waste of time...
Re: Question
Computer programming is also a waste of time, as well as x,y,z etc. career fields. Got scholarship, so everything is free, or will be close to it.TimeSeeker wrote: ↑Mon Nov 05, 2018 2:48 pmMy thesis is on the subject of “Nobody gives a fuck”. All 85 pages of it. Question still remains. Even a subject that helps academia implode on itself is still a thought.

Re: Question
Oh no. My Masters isn’t in Computer Science. I have enough experience in that field to not need a piece of paper. I figured I would learn something new while at it so I am doing Physics as a stepping stone into quantum computing.Eodnhoj7 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 05, 2018 3:44 pmComputer programming is also a waste of time, as well as x,y,z etc. career fields. It is stupid. Even if it was free - the opportunity cost on time wasted is not worth it (for me). But sunk cost fallacy....
Re: Question
I am not arguing that academia isn't a waste of time. But people believe in the piece of paper, for publishing, etc. more than they do than some without it.TimeSeeker wrote: ↑Mon Nov 05, 2018 4:05 pmOh no. My Masters isn’t in Computer Science. The ride will be free, and I can probably get the master thesis done in 3 weeks or so (It is just 75 pages and I will assume 150 sources even though the number is probably way off), so time is not an issue.
So what is your masters in?
Re: Question
I think an enquiry into whether or not “pulling strings” is in fact corruption, and the implications of such an act being classified one way or the other (corrupt or not), would be a fascinating thesis.
For example, strings have been pulled to keep Asians out of Harvard because they’re too smart.
Is this a corruption of the university principle?
Re: Question
Not really, just had a friend give a phonecall to graduate admissions, and talk to them. The discussion should be about principle, not people, even though Ted Kennedy got into Harvard.
Otherwise, philosophy is corrupted.
You know, just recently I tried to keep a discussion on the track of principle, and trolls turned it into a personality parade, so the discussion was concluded.
And, since you focused on people and not principle, have to have be told about that at the post-graduate level, then my contribution concludes.
Self-moderation.

Principle is determined by people.
protagoras: man is the measure of all things.
And by what standard is philosophy corrupted when dealing with all things both good and bad?
Since you have to be told that, by someone without a master's...rofl.
Re: Question
Pulling strings.
Stinky.
Just ask around.

Re: Question
People are principle for people exist through principle as principles. To separate people from a set of principles, good or bad, is illogical.Walker wrote: ↑Wed Nov 07, 2018 6:41 amYou rather miss the point.Eodnhoj7 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 07, 2018 6:37 amNot really, just had a friend give a phonecall to graduate admissions, and talk to them. If you could not keep the discussion your principles dicated, then they failed.
