Be Detached
Be Detached
For the spiritual aspirant, what is important is that he is detached. He is not attached to anything. Does it mean that a spiritual aspirant has to live a boring life without love and laughter, without fun and joy? Of course not, there is a difference between love, laughter, fun, joy and being attached. When you are attached you become dependent on the attachment. You have expectations from that attachment and these dependencies and expectations create misery. They create connections on samsara – the world and these pull us down and stop us from liberation, freedom, nirvana, moksh, mukti. The challenge of life is very clear - not to be attached, to be free. The challenge of life is not to stop loving but to love universally, to love as the soul, to laugh without any expectations. There is nothing wrong in enjoying this beautiful world, which is actually a myth, an illusion, but what is wrong is getting attached to this world, getting attached to properties, things, people and relationships. These are the things that bind us down. Instead of us being in yoga - union with God, we are in samasara. We get attached to the world and getting attached to the world is not the right thing for a spiritual aspirant. The one who wants to go on a spiritual path, onward, upward, forward, God-ward, for him, detachment. viragya is the key. One must live as the spirit, the atman, the soul and not the body. One must be aware at all times that they are part of the divine consciousness. Then this will give sat chit aanand; the aanand, that comes from the sat – the truth of chit - the consciousness that God is everywhere.

Can you get to the point, please? I'm reading all these little threads of yours, and not finding anything save esoteric dharmic regurgitation.

Be Detached
No.
You're organic, fleshy, material, 'real'.
You're irrevocably embedded in the world.
Plenty of time to 'detach' when you're dead.
Get in there and 'live'.

Why not detached yourself from your computer, and run along to find your "liberation" from the material world?AiR wrote:For the spiritual aspirant, what is important is that he is detached. You'll not get any reward from god here.
Re: Be Detached
The point is this - we need to understand who we are and why we are here, and not that very generic reply that we are here because we have to be happy. Are we truly happy or are we passing through phases of happiness and unhappiness? When are we going to realize the true purpose of life is to realize who we are, and that we must realize the source. We must realize that true happiness or Aanand comes from nirvana, from liberation, from freedom and we cannot be free unless we are detached. This is the simple truth and a rather simple point that one is trying to make.Dalek Prime wrote:Can you get to the point, please? Re: Be Detached
The whole concept of not realizing the importance of detachment and saying - have fun, life is to have a blast, enjoy and live - is true, as long as you don’t realize that you’re a cave man or frog in the well and you believe that this world is all that there is. But what about the world beyond? What about pre-birth, post death? When you get to know the answers to all that, then you will realize how important detachment is. But if you don’t want to get out of the cave, if the frog is happy within the well, then why ponder beyond?henry quirk wrote:No.

Everything in life is not just about reward. It is about the realization of the truth -who we are and why we are here, and to finally realize that we cannot get freedom from action, but rather, we must have freedom in action. Therefore, every morning when we wake up, we do something, but are we doing things that liberate us or are we doing things that keep us attached?Hobbes' Choice wrote:Why not detached yourself from your computer, and run along to find your "liberation" from the material world?AiR wrote:For the spiritual aspirant, what is important is that he is detached. You are just fooling yourself, but no one else.
I don't need Aanand to be happy, I can achieved happiness as I do so often with never hearing about anananada. The only Ananda I was ever interested in was a Headshop in Brighton of that name.

I had a moment in my life where I practiced detachment successfully...for a while.
The period culminated in an experience that to this day I am unable to even begin to express.
Detachment is important in the consciousness of a human - philosophically.
There is a good reason that in philosophical vernacular ecstasy is defined as detachment or to stand outside of ones self.

Why does the immortal soul need to attain moksha? What does it want liberation from? Why does it need happiness so badly? If the soul is part of God, should it not be in a permanent state of moksha?AiR wrote:For the spiritual aspirant, what is important is that he is detached. He is not attached to anything. In other words you don't know what you think.Bill Wiltrack wrote:.I am unable to even begin to express.

Others don't know if you think at all, as there is precious little evidence of it.
Re: Be Detached
How do we know that we think, that we have a particular opinion or conviction ?
Just because some facts occur to us at the same time and we draw a conclusion from these facts which we use as premises (assumptions) ?
Socrates knew that he did not knew.
Did he think ? He was trying to argue, to make conclusions from given premises but the premises were hardly ever objection-proof.

I think what I was trying to express above is that there was an experience that crossed a different dimension. The experience is beyond an intellectual understanding. Even trying to accurately describe that experience would bastardize it.
