Are some British trying to be imperialistic saying that American is a "British dialect?"

How should society be organised, if at all?

Are some British trying to be imperialistic saying that American is a "British dialect?"

Post by Philosophy Explorer »

It seems that way to me. I know that British isn't taught at American public schools going all the way back to Teddy Roosevelt. Why should I spell theater, theatre?, when theater is the official spelling in the US. The UK would do better to focus on itself than expect the US to fall under their dominion again.

England is still acting like King Kong after winning that great war against Argentina over the Falkland Islands.

I guess it's a bit like the "Ebonics" debate here in the US. "Original" is "genuine", is "authentic", is "better" than "derivative" is "imitation", is "copy", is "inferior". In a sense the ghost of Plato still haunts us to whatever extent.

That's because it's not British but English.
Why should I spell theater, theatre?, when theater is the official spelling in the US. ...
You don't have to that's the joy of English and its dialects.
The UK would do better to focus on itself than expect the US to fall under their dominion again.
You live in a world of fantasy.

In response:

1) Then how do you distinguish between British English (or the King's English if you like) and American English?

2) I do have to if I want to pass a spelling test

3) Then it's my fantasy

The name of the language is 'English'. How the hell you can claim that 'American' is a different language is beyond ridiculous. I doubt if it even qualifies as a dialect.

As Hex would say, look it up on the internet (btw the American language is broken up into dialects).

I give up. Americans just aren't right in the head.

It's not a British dialect. It's a variety of North American English dialects. As to whether some British are trying to be imperialistic about it, I don't know their motives. However, the language origins fairly reside with the English, proper, however unique all the other dialects of English are that add to the language's rich heritage.

There is no language: British. Britain has Cornish, Welsh, and Scots Gaelic, as well as "English".
You are a turd.

Straw man bullshit.

ALL English is spoken in dialectical forms.

I have to say that I am very disappointed.
PhilX has been starting threads, many thread, too many threads. They all have the form Title, inane question, LINK.
Many of us have been trying to encourage him to think for himself and start a thread that does not just refer to some external link about which he has no knowledge.
So THIS is the result?
PhilX tries to think all on his own.

Oh dear!

There is just so much wrong with this it is hard to know where to begin.
"American is a British dialect"?
A non-existent language is a dialect of a non-existent langauge. The funny thing is "A British Dialect" could only be a dialect of English found in Britain.
From the Title down, the whole thing is just a confusion of terms built on a straw man of "Imperialistic Britons", who are conspicuous by their absence.

One doesn't really, as English is what the English speak and American English is what the American speaks.
2) I do have to if I want to pass a spelling test
You have to spell it the English way?
3) Then it's my fantasy
So it is.

I think we can all see why I am disappointed with your first effort to think for yourself.
