R.I.P. John Nash

Post by Obvious Leo »

I only just heard that John Nash and his wife were tragically killed in a car accident over the weekend. His life story was represented in the well-known book and movie "A Beautiful Mind" and that's exactly what he had. He was tormented throughout his life by a cruel psychiatric illness but his disability did not prevent him from making a major contribution to 20th century mathematical thought. He is best known for his work on Game Theory, which is a specialised sub-category contained within the broader domain of mathematics known as non-linear dynamic systems theory. Various branches of non-linear dynamic systems theory are now used to model all of the sociological sciences, as well as all of the physical sciences except physics, which is yet to move into the 20th century. Nash's work was pivotal to much of this modelling.

John Forbes Nash all but disappeared from academic life during the past couple of decades, leading many people to assume that he must have already died. He hadn't, but now he has, and I for one will mourn his passing. You taught me a lot, John, and I honour you for your work.
