Higgs, scientific announcements & Faith...

How does science work? And what's all this about quantum mechanics?

Higgs, scientific announcements & Faith...

Post by skakos »

We often hear or read about important scientific announcements. These announcements are then reproduced by us or by others and in a moment the announcement is "public truth" for everyone. If "scientists said so", then it "must be so". But how much do we rely on Faith rather than our Understanding in order to believe these announcements? I mean, how many of us have actually the detailed expertise of the specific scientific field related to the announcements, so that we can judge their correctness?

I think it is scary but also tru to say that Faith plays a major role in our acceptance of the truth of almost any scientific announcement we read.

Take the Higgs Boson announcement for example. We all now "know" that Higgs Boson has been "discovered". But simple questions (which at least I have) still elude us. How can a particle which creates mass, have mass on its own? How can scientists "discover" Higgs based on its mass even though the theory predicting it does NOT have a specific prediction about its mass?!? [see http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/ar ... 9312008581]

Is it all based on faith after all?
