Is this a philosopher

Should you think about your duty, or about the consequences of your actions? Or should you concentrate on becoming a good person?

Is this a philosopher

Post by rantal »

Let us imagine a man, a philosopher or I should say a philosopher in name, in qualification, recognised as such, admired as such, lauded even, awarded with every academic honour, published many books, articles in many respected journals who perhaps even attracts a following amongst his students, who starts a new paradigm in philosophy.

Still the question remains, is this man a philosopher?

A lot indicates he is. A better question would be whether there's any reason to believe the contrary.

No, I don't think that is a better question, I fear you miss the import of this question

Yes, although I'd qualify it by saying that in my opinion he or she would have to have a metaphysics, an ethics, an epistemology, a phil of mind and a politics that all hang together and which he or she lives to truly be called a philosopher.

"At least, if mine prove a Castle in the Air, I will endeavour it should be all of a piece, and hang together"
An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, John Locke.

I see, well that is not my reason for doubting his credentials

.

Philosophy begins where the intellect ends.

Philosophy, real philosophy, is alive in a way the intellect is unable to apprehend.

If you are referring to Richard Dawkins, then the answer is No.

I thought he was a biologist. He is part of the controversial neo-atheist movement which itself is an atheist philosophy.

I too miss the import of your question. What is your idea of a philosopher, that conflicts with "recognised as a philosopher"?
