Another Reason European Countries Are Nuts!

Please correct me if the following state of affairs is not certifiable insanity!!!

Like a handful of other countries, including Germany and Denmark, Iceland has official rules about what a baby can be named.

we have that in Norway as well. I've never liked those rules, and opposes them.

In Iceland people are named after their father/mother by adding their firstname and then the -son or -dottir ending, the first meaning "son" and the second "daughter".

So my name being Emil, I could have a child called Inga, a female name, and her last name would be "Emildottir". I'm not 100% sure of these rules but I reckon I got it about right.

In Norway you can only, with some exceptions (including cultural difference exceptions, like Icelanders are allowed to use their tradition), you can only use the last name of either the mother or father or both. Whereas the first name can be anything that isn't offensive or likely to cause problems for the person.

The rules have relaxed over the years, though. Like I was once told a guy renamed himself "værsågod" to his last name, which means "be my guest/please talk", and some other meanings. But that's quite a harmless name, though I guess with classical offensive names like names containing well-known vulgar phrases or reference to sexual themes etc. are not accepted, though I guess if you are an adult you could give yourself a porn-name if you wanted to, but you can't name your baby that way.

Bob has found a good example that helps explain why many in America are resisting what they see as a creeping European influence in our public square. Government keeps getting bigger and bigger, more and more intrusive. At some point it does indeed become ridiculous.

Coming soon, breathing will be illegal unless you have the proper permits. After all, you're exhaling a greenhouse gas!

only problem that arises is when some people think something else is retarded while the other group does not, maybe because of a geographic situation, for instance.

The name I used, "Inga", is a normal Norwegian female name, but in dialect and in the second version of the Norwegian language (we have two versions: Bokmål = book-language, and Nynorsk = New Norwegian, contrary to their indicated meaning the first language is not only used or purely dominates writing, and contrary to the indicated meaning of the second version it is not *new* but simply an artificual language created out of dialects, where the dialects are much older than "the book language" is, as the book language is influented by Danish), in dialect and in the second version of the Norwegian language it means "nobody/nothing". In that sense it is quite offensive, to call yourself your kid "nobody/nothing", and yet it is a widely used name, for which people not really "think" of as "nobody/nothing", and which to the majority of the country's population is not understood as "nobody/nothing".

i was thinking more of 'ghetto' names like rywandesha and such

such names sound stupid and end up spelled inconsistently across different documents sometimes causing major bureaucratic problems

before anyone starts jumping up and down and accusing me of racism

i know several girls with 'ghetto' names who hate their names and use normal names instead - one just turned 18 and started the legal name change process to have her name changed to "Jennifer"

Only an oppressive government would get involved in this issue.

I do not think this is the case in Germany.
But this is no different from taking your father's surname, it's just a different tradition.

But you are usually wrong, and in this case, as usual, you are wrong to generalise "Europe".
In all other countries you can name your child what you like, and can arbitrarily change you name to anything you like, whenever you like in the UK.
I knew a man called Spud, and another called Mildred.
The only restriction on name changing is with an aim to defraud.

We don't want you here in Europe - you are not welcome. So I for one am glad you find so much to hate 'europeans' for - whatever they are?

And you have demonstrated why you are nearly as stupid as Bob.
There is no 'creeping European influence".
Most of our ideas for big government come from the USA.

The US has official rules about what it's citizens can do. In the UK we are not subject to rules made up by UK expats over two hundred years ago; without a constitution we are free to choose our laws.

Good point. A written constitution is like a yoke tied to the neck, weighing you down to stay in the past.

And guess what, we don't want your stupid CNN anti-gun nut Piers Morgan here in the USA, a criminal phone hacker with that British tabloid, who doesn't know anything about America or the U.S. Constitution!!!

In Chazland, everybody but Chaz is stupid.

If you should ever care to examine your posting pattern with some measure of objectivity, you'll see that this is your consistent routine, calling people stupid.

If you'd like I could write a script that would perform this utterly predictable routine for you. Would save you tons of typing!! I could put it nursery rhyme form perhaps so it wouldn't be so overwhelmingly boring.

You and Bob, get it most. Maybe you should reflect upon that fact?
Lets look at what you actually said.

Your claim - Bob has found a good example of 'creeping European influence'.
Bob's claim; Islanders and Norwegians (and Germans to which the thing does not even apply), have different rules about naming their children based on a gender specific rule.

So tell me how this represents 'creeping European influence'? Are Americans being influenced by this and calling their children Bobson or Janesdottir? NO??

That is why you are stupid. Not only was bob factually wrong about this, it is in no way an example of 'creeping European influence'. Its not even a European example but a unique factor about Norway and Iceland.

Objective enough for you?
