Because they have pushed themselves so hard to get into a "sincere" headspace, so they could sell their deceptions with maximal "authenticity" and "genuineness." But something happens when you commit wholly to a theatrical deception like that; you lose yourself. At some point, the character starts to eat away at the real person behind the mask, confusing him (or her), making him start to believe what he has been saying with such sincerity for so long.

The price of committing to a lie is that you start to lose touch with reality. If the premise is true then its calculation will match the conclusion; that's what my perception and the facts tell me.

Did he state explicitly that it was a hoax? No! What he did was negate and politicize it into a hoax as being no more dangerous than a regular flu. I guess as a stable genius he felt qualified to make that observation! When rightly criticized by the dems and not least the medical establishment for failing to act he characterized it as just another type of impeachment hoax perpetrated by the dems and the media. Until the facts were forced on him he lost time tackling the problem as is well known by now and for which he denies any responsibility.

Today, Bernie has just recovered from a heart attack and has reversed a previous promise to disclose his medical records, so he has his campaign pushing stories about Biden's declining mental capacities. Trump and Biden are both routinely accused of dementia which sort of comes with the territory at their age though.
