There have been some doozies but this must surely get first prize for the most ridiculous thread title in the history of the forum.

Bedrooms are freezing. That’s why we invented blankets and duvets.promethean75 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 29, 2025 4:06 pm With proper ventilation systems kitchens don't usually get noticeably hotter than any other rooms. Just sayin.

I titled the thread thus because I wanted to establish some common ground for the existence of moral beliefs. If everyone can agree to not wanting themselves to be murdered, then that seems as good a ground as any for the premise that thou shalt not murder" can be made into a universal societal law for people with or without the existence of a God.accelafine wrote: ↑Fri Dec 05, 2025 11:10 am There have been some doozies but this must surely get first prize for the most ridiculous thread title in the history of the forum.

Essentially you are agreeing with Hillel that "Do not do to somebody else what you would not want done to you" <<is the whole law, the rest is commentary>> While Hillel presumably believed in God, notice he is not basing this on divine authority. The point here is that would not be just about killing/murder. You would not want your things stolen from you, you would not others to deceive you, etc. Can you think f a moral dictate you could NOT base on this principle?Gary Childress wrote: ↑Fri Dec 05, 2025 1:49 pm I titled the thread thus because I wanted to establish some common ground for the existence of moral beliefs. I can't think of any right now. However, if someone else can, they are welcome to post their responses.MikeNovack wrote: ↑Fri Dec 05, 2025 2:17 pmEssentially you are agreeing with Hillel that "Do not do to somebody else what you would not want done to you" <<is the whole law, the rest is commentary>> While Hillel presumably believed in God, notice he is not basing this on divine authority. Re: I don't want to be murdered
It sort of goes without saying. If you 'want' to be 'murdered' then that would essentially be suicide and the 'murder' would be 'assisted suicide'.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Fri Dec 05, 2025 1:49 pmI titled the thread thus because I wanted to establish some common ground for the existence of moral beliefs. Apples and oranges.
Murderphobia is the apple.
Murderphilia is the orange.
One does not begat the other, both can pertain to the same view.
