I expect I've missed a lot of discussion about this, perhaps in other threads, but I'll post this here.
I have the impression that having signed the surrender document, Trump is now backing away from the whole Iran fiasco and telling Vance to salvage whatever he can in the followup negotiations in Switzerland. Trump still can't resist opening his stupid mouth from time to time, and making random threats, but on the whole, it's down to Vance now.
I think this is probably an improvement. Although I have very little time for Vance, at least he MIGHT have some idea of how to negotiate, whereas Mister Art-of-the-Deal clearly has none. Of course, Vance has been dealt a very weak hand.
It is quite astonishing that a country as militarily powerful as America should put itself in a position where it can be thoroughly humiliated by a wobbly and unpopular regime such as that of Iran, while simultaneously renewing the regime's leadership and entrenching them more firmly in power. Trump always claimed to be a genius, and I suppose it does take a special kind of genius to screw up in such a comprehensive fashion.
