Body Language
Re: Body Language
Thanks for your posts. What I'm trying to talk about though, is nothing to do with 'following' someone, or being scared of a wierdo in the street. And I'm not reading into everything by noticing this. It's something that I've noticed for ages, in a casual way, it's just that, recently, I've become more aware of it as being something of interest. I'm not saying this just happens to me, I'm saying it's probably universal. The Sniff. I see that it is the time of season here in Europe where sniffing and coughing are very normal, but I'm claiming, this sniff, is timed to go off at a certain moment.
It happened today actually, a guy with headphones, walked past, as he did, a sniff. It is a communicative act of sorts. Maybe it's wanting to talk to the person but not being able to due to the policeman inside our heads. We do live at a strange time, lot's of shit has gone down, and it is still being processed, still grappling to come to terms with. Sky is falling in, but no-one can find the time, place, or words to talk about it (except maybe online). We know that power seperates (the people - atomised: Houellebecq) as part of its arsenal, and 'facebook' is a shining example of this. We know we must do the opposite, we must come together. The sniff could be an urge for re-connection. Or a sign that one has been insulted or threatened in some way (visually) by the other. Either way it's difficult to talk about without sounding a bit mad. If anyone experiences it let me know.

Example, you are walking down an empty-ish street. You are male, another male walks towards and past you, as he passes, he sniffs. Is it a rebuke of some kind. A unconcious reaction to a problematic thought/feeling which has entered him due to the other. Maybe it also works with women. Just keep a look-out for it happening, next time you pass someone, listen for the sniff, it occurs when both bodies are aligned, one goes one way, the other another way, but at the exact point of passing a sniff is made. Strange.
In this situation, I would think the man sniffed because he needed to sniff.
all the best, rantal
This is good, but when a pattern starts emerging...

Then, first I would remember that as a human, I am prone to see paterns were no patterns exist, I would recognise that this is just part and parcel of being human. So, I would treat that posited pattern with extreme scepticismPluto wrote:rantal wrote:Pluto wrote:Duszek, thanks.

Sorry Pluto, nothing to do with your post.
Exclusively the one above.

OK.
OK. I'm leaving.
Now go back to your important philosophical discussion...
Alright, where were we?
Oh yeah - someone winked at you.
And, someone sniffed at you.
Wow. The world revolves around at you.

Re: Body Language
To Pluto
Is there not a connectedness between art and philosophy.
If this was the only way, for example, Bill could communicate, would you deem it fair to demand he change his way of expression.
If you object to "violence", why did you choose to ignore some of the horrendous verbal violence we have had in the past.
Your post seems stingy, dry and unfriendly.

You are awesome!
Your spot-on observations are well structured & they are actually philosophical. That's rare here.
Well done.

Re: Body Language
No, I never wink. (I checked in the dictionary to be sure what I am talking about.)
Not even to people I know. It is not in my repertoire of body language, somehow.
Sniff ? Like a dog would sniff in order to find out about a person ? Or like the psychopath H. Lector ?
This is an outrageous provocation. I would be appalled.
I think that one gets a complex impression from complex body language of another person. Intuition registers things we are unaware of and so we get a "feeling".
We register when someone pretends to be shy in order to manipulate us into liking him or for some other secret reason. Perhaps just practicing or whatever.
O. Wilde: Being natural is simply a pose.
We are natural when we lose control of ourselves, when we quit our aspiration to be a member of a civilized society.

Re: Body Language
Interesting about the repeating pattern Pluto, I will be more aware of it now and get back to you. Perhaps the sniffing thing is just a guy thing or maybe not done here? I dunno...but I will look out for it. One thing I have noticed about men here is they seem to take up alot of room as opposed to women. Like when you see a guy sitting he usually has his legs spread wide and arms out to take up the most amount of seat available....esp is it is a bench. When you see a woman sitting in the US she usually sits with her hands folded and her legs crossed...she appears to just take up less space.
In my youth...when I was looking to mate with a man in order to have my babies...I would sit in a feminine way...arms folded on my lap and legs crossed...but I was not aware I was doing it at the time...perhaps I was more timid. Now I am more confident in my place in the world. I have had my children, I have my wonderful husband (who is the only man alive who could put up with me) and I am not really aware of a "force" driving me...but I have to admit this is all in hindsight...I did not know this to be the case when I was young...meaning I was unaware that is what I was doing...i.e. being on my 'best' behavior actively looking for a "good" father for my future children.
I am definitely more aggressive now...and I do believe it is because I am not trying to impress anyone into loving me. In fact, I think I will try the sniffing thing...as I have already done the winking thing in my life...lol. I will see how a man reacts when a WOman passing by gives him a sniff...lol. I will let you know what happens...might be fun.

One saying: Oh, you smell good. (a sniff in)
Or: Oh, what a terrible smell. (how impolite that would be even if it were true)
Or just a sign of unconscious exasperation ? Some people sniff when they feel indignant.
Or is this person short of breath due to too much weight ? Or due to the overtaking ?
Or is it really a pass of some kind ? (known to insiders)
Or is it a sign of a competition won ? (I am faster than you.)
Does the sniff occur in Belgium only or in other countries too ?
Does the man sniffing look artistic ? or a professional ? or a thug ?

1. There is a 'connectedness' between art and philosophy. Is it not called aesthetics. Art is connected to everything.
2. Bill can communicate however he wants. I just find his images offensive, and his texts patronising. He comes across as insincere and I don't want it on a thread I've made.
3. Horrendous verbal violence (not sure what you are referring to) exists. It is a sad fact of online discussion. If I see it and feel moved to condemn it, I will. I wrote a thread, an offensive pic was posted of a guy having his head kicked-in on a bus (having no connection with the thread), so I said remove it.

Just a quick inhale with the nostrils. 'Unconcious exasperation' is a possibility, but then why would it come out as you're passing someone. I like the 'short of breath due to weight', but no, it is not out of exhaustion.
It could be a sign, a club, a sniff indicates I am a member of 'the sniffers'.
I don't know if it occurs elsewhere, it must. It would be strange if just here. The people who do it look artistic, yes. They look like they would support Occupy. They are not thugs or professional in appearance. They are...outsiders, in a way.
