A Philosophy of Mind

Is the mind the same as the body? What is consciousness? Can machines have it?

Nor was I. I did communicate with Rick, acknowledging that my language was inappropriate and so forth but, without breaching confidentiality, I wasn't reprimanded or threatened with a ban.

And I have apologised directly to people where I felt it appropriate.

My conscience is clear and I'm feeling fine, not sure what these recent posts are quite about.

Barbara, now I think about it I was perhaps too hasty in offering you the olive branch and giving you an apology. :|

Given what Koya said privately to me, there was really no need for me to say much to him. We're all adults here, and it was understood on all hands that we had drawn a line under that incident, with appropriate regrets expressed and hands shaken.

As to bans... all I'll say is that it takes quite a lot to get banned from this forum. Straw Dog managed it, but he really was trying very hard. (It was the threats of physical violence that did the trick in his case, though I think I might have eventually banned him for his repeated obscene homophobic abuse of pretty much everyone he encountered towards the end of his time here) There have been a few spats here, but usually they either just settle down or are sorted out courteously between the people involved. I do sometimes visit other forums, and this is definitely one of the most civilized I've seen. Even the Ford Scorpio Owners Forum has nastier rows than this place! This is partly due to AMod's tactful moderation and partly down to the fact that the posters here are generally nicer, brighter and more more mature than the average keyboard warrior.

Anyway, apart from SD nobody has been banned for years. Please, NOBODY TAKE THIS AS A CHALLENGE! One Straw Dog is enough for the time being, I think.

Barbara - you are welcome to carry on posting in this thread until the end of time as far as I'm concerned. Please don't feel you've been 'hung out to dry' - as AMod has already pointed out, the postings in question were swiftly removed. If you ever feel you have a problem here then PM either AMod or myself. That goes for everyone.

I would issue an appeal for everyone to have reasonably broad shoulders, to cultivate moderately thick skin, and to be kind to one another, but as I've already mentioned, we're all adults here, so I'll shut up.

Yes, I should like to apologise too for my role in this - I liked Barabra's stuff though did not agree with her position, but on reflection it may be that she felt the combination of imitation and disagreement equaled mockery - when the former was intended as flattery, to soften the criticism. 3 or 4 posts in I was sincerely under the impression that we were developing a rapport, and it wasn't until Koy's PM was published I realized otherwise. Two points remain; I should like to say that the arguments expressed in this style reflect arguments made by me elsewhere, and that when I realized all was not as I had thought I offered to delete my post and leave this thread if Barbara would delete Koy's PM.

have you fixed your chopper yet barbara?

this Mark Bllack person...

over and out.

Then Koy and Mark Black we should make a pack that excessive language should not be allowed to approach philosophy’s noble purpose. Those make believe they are educated are only as good as a play, trying their hand at trivial restructuring turning things upside down. They act as if they are at a festival, enjoying a life of play, not as citizens that should be doing their duty for society.

Philosophers are compelled or induced to do their work in the best way and grow up into noble order that nature assigns to them.

The axiom “Society will follow the general principle that friends have all things in common.” Education if started right moves with collective force like a wheel education takes root and this improvement affects the breed in all society.

The two causes of the deterioration of education are wealth, and poverty. Then, under the influence either of poverty or of wealth, people and their work are equally liable to degenerate. Wealth and poverty, the one fosters luxury indolence, and the other avariciousness and rough existence, both are in discontents.

Socrates believed every individual should be put to use for which nature intended them and then every person would do its own business, and the society would be one.

I believe you may mean 'pact'.

How are you defining 'excessive' in regard to language?

If you would like to discuss the above in any detail, perhaps you could post your opinions on one of the two ethics threads which have this as their topic?

(one of them is called 'Offensiveness & Respect')

Ok I'll have a go at modulating my language. I'll even enter a pact if you like, although language is covered by the rules/guidance of this forum I think.
