Martin Luther King Jr's. Last Speech...

A prophetic speech recounted today, Labor Day here in the States.

The Rev. King may have been America's last great man. Our last GREAT popular philosopher.

The Rev. Dr. King associated Labor Rights with Civil Rights.

Today, here in 2011, almost 44 years after the death of King we still want to encompass his dream.

From Wikipedia:

On March 29, 1968, King went to Memphis, Tennessee, in support of the black sanitary public works employees, represented by AFSCME Local 1733, who had been on strike since March 12 for higher wages and better treatment. In one incident, black street repairmen received pay for two hours when they were sent home because of bad weather, but white employees were paid for the full day.

On April 3, King addressed a rally and delivered his "I've Been to the Mountaintop" address at Mason Temple, the world headquarters of the Church of God in Christ. King's flight to Memphis had been delayed by a bomb threat against his plane. In the close of the last speech of his career, in reference to the bomb threat, King said the following:

And then I got to Memphis. And some began to say the threats, or talk about the threats that were out. What would happen to me from some of our sick white brothers?

Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now. Because I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land. And I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.

"... where little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sisters and brothers."

Any closer in America Bill? As a black and white couple I knew said they were most uncomfortable in the states.

We, in America, we are well on our way.

We are still becoming the true melting pot of the world.

We have made tremendous gains, especially since Barack Obama has become President.

I have to admit we still have a ways to go.

If by melting-pot we mean mixed-race children then amongst the 'white' nations Britain is the true melting-pot of race. Brazil is pretty much the melting pot. America is just a cheek-by-jowl nation and if Obama had not been born in Hawaii I doubt he'd be prez or even exist, as its about the only place where casual racism could not exist in the states due to the polynesians still being alive and kicking.

America is the true melting pot;

Asians

Irish

Asian Indians

Mexican

Chinese

Japanese

Native Americans

Italians

Cubans

I believe as far as diversity and range of races, America is the true litmus test of humanity and of modern government.

Hyphenated American

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the United States, the term hyphenated American is an epithet commonly used from 1890 to 1920 to disparage Americans who were of foreign birth or origin, and who displayed an allegiance to a foreign country. It was most commonly used to disparage German Americans or Irish Americans (Catholics) who called for U.S. neutrality in World War I. Former President Theodore Roosevelt was an outspoken anti-hyphenate and Woodrow Wilson followed suit.

The term "hyphenated American" was published by 1889, and was common as a derogatory term by 1904. During World War I the issue arose of the primary political loyalty of ethnic groups with close ties to Europe, especially German Americans and also Irish Americans.

Trust me, I am an American, since Barack Obama has become president each an every race, creed, & culture has moved towards becoming just simply known as American.

Believe me, there is a lot of melting going on between races here. We are all one.

We'll believe you after the next election Bill.
Believe me, there is a lot of melting going on between races here. We are all one.
You always have been Bill, the pursuit of individual happiness united under the pursuit of the almighty dollar. Its why I've told anyone who'd listen that importing your 'multiculturalism' was a mistake for us as the left once marched for multiracialism and my opinion is it was a mistake to change this.
p.s.
Since when have the Irish, Mexicans, Japanese, Italians and Cubans been races?

What race are Native Americans, Asian Indians and Asians?

I think you mean cultures not races.

Good point.

I was naming cultures not races.

As I was typing those examples I was thinking;

Black, white, olive, yellow, brown, red.

Well lets take at look at your subconscious thinking shall we Bill. You didn't mention the black in your list, the red is pretty much dead, the black was the back you built your nation upon, the yellow and the poor mick were used to build the infrastructure, the mick and the guinea have a long history of emnity, and the brown is your current peon. So whilst I think your heart is in the right place and your country is young and has been at the forefront of many assertions of rights and that you have a white/black prez I still think 'melting-pot' is far from the case other than the right to make the almighty dollar and lets see where the new 'christian' white now takes you. Good luck as I think you'll need it given that racism is still a major underlying factor of your culture.

The world's definition of Democracy and the future of individual freedom rests on the Presidential election in the United States of America, November, 2012.

Martin Luther King wrote, arguably, one of his most inspirational writings, often called, Letter from Birmingham Jail.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letter_fro ... ngham_Jail

Within that letter we find the famous quote:

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,"

I love the part,

We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly… Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider…

I continue to be so impressed by the man who I am proud to call an American, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr..
