I highly recommend this book by Douglas Hofstadter. And Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid too, if you haven't read it.

I'll second all that and add his - Metamagical Themas (ISBN 0-465-04566-9) - as a companion to both the above.

As an aside, I like what he said the book should have been called if it wasn't so clunky -
" 'I' Is a Strange Loop".
