How does science work? And what's all this about quantum mechanics?

Unlikely -- that's what a plague lab does, studies plague. The pneumonic form of plague is not new. And yes the lab workers would be vaccinated against plague but there are serious doubts it is much protection when the infection is pneumonic. Too fast for an immune system response?. While this deadly form of plague is spread person to person (the other forms usually not -- flea vector) the speed at which the infected go from asymptomatic (not coughing, not spreading) to flat on their backs means not much time to spread person to person.
