If Philosophy Now registered itself as a "non-profit" or else a "not-for-profit" and could benefit from public grants and/ or tax breaks (as well as maybe solicit donations from wealthy philanthropists interested in a better society), would that be a plausible strategy for holding onto the site? This place is kind of like PBS or the BBC to me.

Perhaps the PBS funding methods should be adopted to fund this new foundation. Semi-annual televised philoso-thons, complete with phone banks manned by celebrity volunteers. It looks like the site costs $30 per month to run, so we'll need our big hitters to really step up to the plate on this one.

Maybe if we can get Walker to interrupt his purchasing of Golden Trump bibles and training shoes for a couple of months, we can redirect that lucrative stream of cash towards the preservation of philosophy.

I'm sure it must be more than $30 a month somewhere along the line if it's requiring the mods to rely heavily on advertising to support it. Heck, I'll donate and send $30 a month just to keep the site going. Sign me up. Add it to the cost of my PN Magazine subscription.

In the listing on flippa it says the site generates "Monthly Profit -GBP £30 /mo" which is around the cost of spinning up a low end virtual server in Linode or Digital Ocean. I would guess that is exactly how this site is run. Technically in freedom-money that is actually 40 buckaroos rather than 30 though.

That 40 bucks is of course not inclusive of whatever it costs to have the IT guy maintain and update it, Rick probably has that covered under a larger web hosting deal and would expect the buyer to know how to do that for themselves.

OK. If it's a whole lot more than $30 a month, then that's a different ballgame. Maybe take a up a collection from forum members or charge a monthly fee to be a member of the forum. The fee could be modest but it might be enough to keep the site going if the cost of running it per month is not in the thousands.
