But the separatist movement in Alberta is older than you think, beginning in the 1970's.
Alberta separatism was particularly intense after Trudeau (the Elder) started the National Energy Program in the 80s. Polling showed that about half of Albertans thought they were getting nothing out of federalism and wanted to leave.

News flash: Canada's economy has been going in the tank for THREE Liberal administrations now, and Carney himself has been in the Liberal party since 2021, and advisor since 2024, heading their portfolio on "economic growth". These administrations have been, without rival, the LEAST effective in Canadian history, and at times, downright embarrassing.
Carney hasn't fixed all the problems in the one year and two months that he has been prime minister. What a loser. Poilievre would have fixed it in 24 hours. And Canada would be the second hottest country in the world.

For sure, eh.

Right. His party caused all the problems, and many while he was their economics advisor. Since then, what has he done to improve the situation?

I'll wait for your answer.

Carney and Smith signed a pipeline agreement on July 2.

It wasn't Carney's idea. He wanted to stay with the Trudeau policies. But unless he gives to D. Smith what she wants, he only stokes the fires of Alberta separatism. And he knows it. So he caved.

As I predicted.

You should have known already, if you followed the politics. Carney fought it, tooth-and-nail, but then had to give something. So he did. We'll see if it's enough. But it certainly wasn't his idea. It was Smith's.

Time will tell. Keep a few things in mind.

A) A pipeline will not come into existence immediately.
B) No (democratic) government can limit the decision making ability of a future government.
C) The political situation in the US might be different two years from now.

Well, no: we already know that it was Smith who pushed for the pipeline, and Carney who was against it, initially. That was public.

THAT IS not what "time will tell" was referring to but what Carney did. You are assuming he gave into the certainty of a pipeline. I was saying the people against the pipeline who have given into it have done so "if nothing happens that would let the effect of this decision be reversed"

Oh. You mean, will he actually do as he has now promised, or is he just stonewalling Smith? Maybe the second. But he was part of the Trudeau admin. that fought pipelines tooth-and-claw: so either he was lying then, or lying now...lying, either way. The guy's a bit of a snake.

A pipeline is now a necessity. It's the way to move forward.
