Gary's Corner
Re: Gary's Corner
Martyn was a hyper-sensitive man attached to alcohol and love.

- Attachment creates mental conflict.
- Attachment is the cause of suffering.
- Attachment inspired Martyn.
- His motive force to brilliance did him in, which may not be logical.
- Ending attachment is Buddha’s path to end suffering … which is a distinctly different view from ending the enquiry with: life is suffering.

The Buddha was a would-be king who realized karma was not on his side. So he sought a way out of karma. Maybe he succeeded. If he did, then it wasn't through violence.

That would be the opposite-entropy-endpoint.
Maybe then everything would be A-OK.

Re: Gary's Corner
When I was younger, I was addicted to pornography. These days, my sex drive is almost zero, probably thanks to all the meds I'm on, maybe age has a little to do with it also. If I found a pretty female to keep me company, I couldn't do anything to please her. If I hadn't given all my money to the last female I tried to date, I'd at least have some money to give a prospective mate, so I'm pretty much a zero in the financial department too now. I have nothing going for me.
Oh yeah, there's also good looks. I'm pretty much a zero in that department also. I never was a very good-looking guy to begin with. Old age has only made it worse.

An ignorant person is someone who doesn't know something. A stupid person thinks s/he knows something but actually doesn't know what s/he believes to know. A wise person knows what s/he doesn't know. I'm mostly ignorant. Maybe a little stupid too sometimes.

Being an intelligent theist is a bit like being an intelligent alchemist or palm reader, at least as far as some knowledgeable people practice theism.

A person may live or die clinging to what they believe, and they may or may not die for what they believe. And a person who doesn't live or die clinging to what they believe may or may not live longer.

Re: Gary's Corner
I studied philosophy for a while. And from what little I gathered, I came to the conclusion very early that there are no definitive answers to most of the questions that have plagued philosophy for centuries. That's why those questions have plagued philosophy for centuries. And they will always plague philosophy. And when I realized that it's much easier and more economical on time and energy to cut the chase and simply say, "I don't know", I stopped studying philosophy.
It's said sometimes that someone who knows a little about everything knows a lot about nothing. From that, a person might conclude that a professor of agnosticism is ignorant and think that ignorance is a bad thing. But maybe to know a lot about nothing is to know more about nothing than most other people do. And when someone asks me, "What are you busy studying these days?" is it not correct of me to say that I'm busy studying nothing? And at the end of life, I can exclaim to those around me that I am a relative authority on nothing and have more to say about nothing than most others do. Because talking about nothing doesn't connect me with others in a superficial way. It connects me with others in a fundamental way. Because if I talked about nothing, then I would become a beginner at everything, and people would look down on me with callous indifference. But knowing the most about nothing makes me able to speak as an expert on nothing to almost anyone and everyone. And as an expert on nothing, I can just as readily have long conversations with other experts in other fields on nothing.

I wish I had a pretty girlfriend. She and I would have nothing to talk about.

Re: Gary's Corner
Parting with someone who means more to me than any other person is always depressing. There are plenty of other people out there, but there is only ever one who means more to me than anyone else. And it always seems to be someone who doesn't feel the same way about me. Is there something unattractive to me about someone who thinks I mean more than anyone else to them? Or is it that all the people who have thought I mean more to them than anyone else have, by chance, been unattractive people?

Because I've studied nothing for a long time and have a lot to say about it. I wish I could find a pretty girlfriend to talk to about what I've learned about nothing.Lacewing wrote: ↑Thu Jun 11, 2026 10:39 pmGary Childress wrote: ↑Thu Jun 11, 2026 4:16 pm I wish I had a pretty girlfriend.
