Yes, we know that. The question is, "How can that happen?" After all, if people are "essentially good," it should not even be possible: there'd be nowhere from which any evil or "wolfishness" could even come.
So where does the "not good" stuff come from?

"Basically good" doesn't mean 'purely good' or 'only good' or 'unable to be bad'.
It just means that there is much more good than bad.
