Where did we come from? Where are we going?
Where did we come from? Where are we going?
Hopefully I'll soon have the answers to these two questions as I'm about two thirds of the way through Origin by Dan Brown, which opens with the assassination of a famous scientist who had discovered them, and was about to reveal them in a live broadcast. The hero, Robert Langdon, along with his latest love interest, Ambra Vidal, have to try and find out what they were and tell the world, before the baddies can get to them first and shut them up. Although perhaps not quite as iconic as the Da Vinci Code, this is still pretty good stuff, if a little trite.
In other news, two days ago I came down with a sore throat, which is pretty unusual for me, as I'm usually blessed with good health. The last time I had one was nearly two years ago. Unlike that one, this one quickly moved, yesterday, to the runny nose phase, and today it's very much in the blocked sinuses phase, which is a problem, as it means I can't walk around without bumping into things, so depending on how it goes, may have to call in sick at work, which I hate doing, as I'm very proud of my almost 100% attendance record.

Covid. The symptoms are everywhere the same, traveling by plane. It hasn't hit me but it's all around.Maia wrote: ↑Sun Nov 09, 2025 11:40 am Hopefully I'll soon have the answers to these two questions as I'm about two thirds of the way through Origin by Dan Brown, which opens with the assassination of a famous scientist who had discovered them, and was about to reveal them in a live broadcast. Who Are We, Where did we come from, Where are we going?
The one who someday first answers that, to the understanding and acceptance of everyone, will have found the unified field theory of existence.

I think it's just a normal cold, to be honest, and is going through all the phases quite quickly, thankfully.Walker wrote: ↑Sun Nov 09, 2025 11:52 amCovid. What I had two years ago might have been Covid, though. It certainly felt bad enough.
Re: Where did we come from? Where are we going?
Some of the kids had colds while the adults had Covid. Good for you that it's time for hot soup and tea with honey, less unpleasantness.
Re: Where did we come from? Where are we going?
I generally go with Plato and Aristotle on that question because it is right. That which has a function exists for that function. In other words, Discovering one's purpose is the most rudimentary IQ test there is. We have a function just like any other life support system of a living organism.
The desire to look beyond the obvious is a left over from evolution, animals looking for the boss or looking to be the boss.
If one does not know what they are, why they are, or how to do the job the were made for, then they can never live a fulfilling life. They are always lost. Those who do not know what they are, why they are, or how to do their own work, are easy prey for other wild animals in a similar delusional state.
People who jabber about free will are only often doing their best not hide the fact that they cannot do their own work.
I am going to check out the rechargeable batteries AA which put out 1.5 volts like alkaline bats do. My Fluke meter needs new battery as the ohm's function is out of calibration. It has been out for a while now. Most everything I use uses AAA so I don't keep AA on hand. But my niece uses them for her crocheting headlights but those are rechargeables at 1.2 volts so the automatically put the Fluke out of cal.
One should be able to figure out that when one actually believes that will and purpose are contradictions, something is not working in the head.

Re: Where did we come from? Where are we going?
To what purpose is discovering purpose and intent when the end is the same for all?
The answer to that question requires a philosophy, even one that may challenge the premise of an end, or ideas concerning identity of one and all. If pressed for time and energy due to the demands of life the philosophy may be more rudimentary, but it's still there for anyone to find.

So you are trying to say, Why live when we are going to die.Walker wrote: ↑Tue Nov 11, 2025 7:47 amTo what purpose is discovering purpose and intent when the end is the same for all?

Birth and death are correlatives, i.e. the limits of life. Is a limit the relative difference between them, i.e. is the noun a verb? That is the first principle, Birth and Death are not life. We have two, and only two basic concepts, that is our binary off, on, off, dead, alive, dead. These elements of a thing cannot be predicated of each other, ever. The noun is not the verb. The verb is not the noun. The form of a thing is not the material of a thing.
We apply form to material to make everything.
In short, we are given life. All that is required of us is to make something of it. You cannot define either element, as Plato noted. they are not things.
So, when you look at the limits of life, and cannot reason about it, it is because the shape, the limits, in of themselves are not things. We combine shape with material to make all things, animate and inanimate.
And, as a form of life, we make things, even our own life, for a purpose we impose on it. So, it is your intelligence alone, we asserts the purpose of every behavior you make.
Therefore, you have to be a fool, to ask me, or God, or a potato, why in the fuck should you do anything.
We are alive, we are stuck with it. Make something of it, or do not. But do not fucking blame anything for what you made.
You do not ask where are we going as if you are a dumb animal, You say, I am going here so that I can make something either beautiful or a piece of shit. You take responsibility for what you do, where you go, and why, or you simply are nothing at all.

Re: Where did we come from? Where are we going?
I'm saying that question is answered by one's philosophy, which is why everyone has a philosophy even if it's not articulated.
I thought I said that quite clearly. Clarity clearly doesn't overcome agenda, at least not all the time. Maybe just, sometimes.
Re: Where did we come from? Where are we going?
There you go. Blaming an inanimate, non existent, pooka for what you are responsible for doing.
Re: Where did we come from? Where are we going?
When the purpose is attempting to refute an elegant presentation, a bit of inelegant twisting sometimes becomes any means necessary.
For a time in life each one just doesn’t care, and the cure for that sometimes arrives tragically young.

Where did we come from?
The bathroom!
Where are we going?
To the bathroom!
What is important is what you do in between taking a shit.
And what is that?
Well, you can look for the next bathroom, or watch reruns of I Love Lucy. Or you can do something constructive, like the next Ottoman Empire.
Yeah, but it will all eventually go to shit!
Well, install your monitor in the bathroom so you don't miss the commercials.
But I don't know how!
Well, take a book with you then.
But, I don't know how to read!
That is your problem.
How is that?
If all a mind can do, factually, is read. Then all it can do with it, is write.

Re: Where did we come from? Where are we going?
I'd just like to say that Professor Peart's over-heated Ayn Randian celebration of freewill in the song Freewill demonstrates that either Neil was no metaphysicist or he was (having read Hume before or after Rand) but knew a song about determinism wouldn't sit well with everyone. Only Sabbath would do a horrible song like that. They didn't, but they would if such a song were determined.
Re: Where did we come from? Where are we going?
I have read Rand, nice story telling, also a bit revealing about herself, but what I want to know, how can anyone believe the popular myth that she was a philosopher?promethean75 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 11, 2025 7:41 pm I'd just like to say that Professor Peart's over-heated Ayn Randian celebration of freewill in the song Freewill demonstrates that either Neil was no metaphysicist or he was (having read Hume before or after Rand) but knew a song about determinism wouldn't sit well with everyone.
