Populating a new Drive
Populating a new Drive
Populating a new drive is a time when you are copying another drive's data for some reason.
Never buy those enclosed drives, they more often than not do not have sufficient fans and you cannot open them without voiding the warrantee. If you are forced to use them, then you have to trickle the job, letting it cool down intermittently.
Open the door to the array, and place one of those cheap fans in front, in line with the direction of air from the back fan, and do this for both boxes, one you are copying, and the other populating, this will keep the temp of the array well into the safe zone.
This is the only time you run the box balls to the walls for hours even days. Keep an eye on the temp using Crystaldisk Info which is free.
Now those cheap fans, you can easily make a hanger for them cut from a coat hanger. The screw holes in the fan, you can use to slide it onto the ends of the reshaped coat hanger. You fashion it to hang right in front of the drives in the array.
The results I get is approx 15 C cooler. I use the 80 or 120 mm fans They plug right into the usb port and Amazon sells them on the cheap.
or you can use one of those phone chargers that take a usb plugin.
If you have a single external drive you can take the drive out of, you should take it out and put the large fan on it and when done, put it back in the mini box.
Almost forgot, Use FreeFileSync, do not depend on Microsoft to do the job right. You might regret depending on Windows built in file transfer. Microsoft's file utilities may be okay for everyday, but by now you know it often crashes. Microsofts file system is hooked into things it should not be doing and prioritizes data collection over doing its fucking job.

The same FUCKING SHIT can be asked of you, dipshit! I'm an ex military man of 16 years that protected your dumb ass and all the people you know and love, bet they have a hard time reciprocating, from the Soviet Nuclear Threat during the cold war from November of 1974 until November 1991. So my job was, if need be, killing people. Now I'm retired and have the GREAT LIFE of talking with people like you in this AWESOME FORUM Rick created, and I'll thank him always for putting up with assholes like you and I!!!!!Phil8659 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 07, 2025 12:08 amWho in the fuck do you think you are?SpheresOfBalance wrote: ↑Thu Nov 06, 2025 11:51 pmNothing personal, but I don't believe this has a place here in the Philosophy Now forum.Phil8659 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 06, 2025 2:12 pm Populating a new drive is a time when you are copying another drive's data for some reason.

I am a Vietnam Vet asshole, You protect me? you were still probably milking cows when I was serving.
But it still goes, who in the fuck do you think you are you rude son of a bitch?
And, anyone who thinks that serving their country is about killing people as a job, is simply mentally unstable.

What else is it about? And how exactly are you defining 'serving'? No you're the rude son of a bitch, and a whore to boot! Using this forum to try and prove you're a computer newbie, which you were good at. I started computing in 1983, and building IBM clones, (which is what todays PC's were called back then) in 1994, on the Internet at the same time, but on that which preceded it, ARPANET in the 1980's while in the USN, not the army. Was also an electronics tech for a short period.
That you project your understanding of my words answers to you dementia and the way YOU see things, idiot, so you're the whack job. Funny how ones minds eye becomes apparent when they open their big fat flap trap pretending that they're actually smart enough to understand someone far superior to them.
If your computer HDD cloning claptrap was meant to impress people, from my perspective you looked like a fool, a newbie, a nugget! Let the fingers roll, and look like a moron.
As far as my emoticons go, NO I'm on my first childhood, it keeps me youthful and alive, better than a repressed shriveled dipshit like you!
