Is Philosophical Debate Still Valuable in the Age of Information?

Post by silverfish »

In an era where opinions spread faster than truth, I wonder — does philosophical debate still hold real value?

When every topic is reduced to quick takes and viral “philosophy memes,” can reasoned dialogue still shape how we think, live, and act? Or has philosophy become more about rhetoric than reflection?

I believe genuine debate remains vital — not to “win,” but to test our assumptions and sharpen how we see the world. Yet it feels harder to sustain meaningful discussion when attention spans shrink and certainty dominates.

So, I’d like to ask:
  • What makes a philosophical discussion worth having today?
  • Can online debates still produce genuine insight, or are they just noise with fancier words?
Curious to hear others’ perspectives — both from the academic side and everyday experience.
