You have been permanently banned from this board

Post by Dubious »

I've received this message a few times when attempting to connect to the site.

The full message is a follows:

You have been permanently banned from this board.

Please contact the Board Administrator for more information.

A ban has been issued on your IP address.

Why specifically on my IP address; what would cause that since it doesn't refer to anything personal I may have done?

Thank You!

It happens to me too and it's getting worse. Sometimes I get a big white X on a red circle with 'YOU ARE BANNED FROM THIS SITE' written across the screen. It's a bit unnerving

That sounds worse than what I'm getting! At times I think they may actually be doing me a favour if I were banned...and a few others who wouldn't object either. But as long as the door is open it's inevitable I'll walk through it. I know myself well enough to confirm that.🥴

When you realized you were banned, did you have suspicions as to why, and question your judgment of propriety?

Correction:

When you thought that you were banned, did that realization give you suspicions as to why you received the message that you had been banned, and did you question your judgment of propriety based on those suspicions of what might have led you to receive that message? Or, did you blow it off as nonsense, like I did, when told that I had been banned.

Although it lacks the ultimate sophistication of simplicity, I kind of like it.

It was my IP address that was banned on such occasions, not me personally - I'm working on it! - which I gather would have been a different kind of message based on my login credentials. That's the curious part. What in my IP address triggered that response...which seems to be happening more often.

Good question! No, I never once used a VPN to access this site and not any site I usually go into like bank, bill payments and suchlike. The only time I may use a VPN is to watch some programs in those places where one gets the message not available in your country.

Yes, others have been reporting this too. I am trying to find out why.

I have a suspicion that it may be due to the Cloudflare security that we now use to keep out bots. You may have spotted media coverage of the difficulties they have been experiencing worldwide. As we only ban IP addresses very occasionally and we aren't then unbanning them five mins later, Cloudflare seems the likeliest explanation, I will discuss this with Bora.

It's possible to get out of it by deleting cookies. So it has something to do with cookies and the timing of cookies.

Kinda looks like one of the Cloudflare load balancer endpoints is IP blocked, and the problem goes away when the 5 minute session token expires and you round-robin to another endpoint that isn't blocked.
