Nothing wrong with having enemies -- but we may have chosen incorrectly. I think we should designate New Zealand as our number one enemy. Send in the battleships and shell Christchurch!

WE did well having Granada as an enemy. Invading Iraq and Afghanistan was costly and worthless. We took over Granada with a dozen marines.

In the US, power is acquired via accumulating votes. Commonly votes of folks who don't pay a lot of attention. Thus parties need a simple narrative to sell. Psychologically an "us" vs "them" narrative is quite easy to sell. It's essentially the core of most media. Not a surprise. In fact it would be amazing if it were some other way.
