"then if he's a knight, the whole system stinks and should be scrapped"
I lost faith in His Majesty back when Elton John was knighted. Nothing against Elton... he's a great songwriter. I just think he's better suited for doing the crocodile rock than defending the crown, madam.

You can buy a knighthood anyway, so it's all a load of bollocks. Self-important twats demanding to be called 'sir'.
Re: Scrapping the monarchy
Can Americans buy knighthoods? How much do they cost? It would be fun to be a knight, although accelafine might make that pesky vow to "honor and respect women" a challenge.accelafine wrote: ↑Tue Jul 15, 2025 1:00 am You can buy a knighthood anyway, so it's all a load of bollocks. P.s. You can buy lots of things. That doesn't mean they're all "bullocks".
Re: Scrapping the monarchy
The monarch is supposedly a unifying figure, above politics, but Charles has always been well known for meddling behind the scenes, even when he was Prince of Wales.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Mon Jul 14, 2025 7:08 pmWhat is the purpose of retaining the monarchy? Does anyone believe in the Divine Right of Kings anymore?Maia wrote: ↑Mon Jul 14, 2025 6:41 am There seems to be a growing opinion in favour of scrapping the monarchy. For example, Rupert Lowe's Restore Britain movement has something called the Cromwell Club, and Britain First has proposed having an elected Lord Protector, again, emulating Cromwell. The reasons are fairly simple, namely, Charles's perceived treachery. Giving a knighthood to Sadiq Khan, for example, who has suppressed any enquiry into the rape gangs in London, and giving an MBE to another Muslim politician who, again, is noted for suppressing a rape gang enquiry in Yorkshire.
I find this interesting for historical reasons, given the less than stellar track record of the previous two kings named Charles. Charles I, of course, was put on trial by Cromwell and beheaded, and Charles II was a traitor, secretly receiving massive bribes from the French for most of his reign. Personally, I think it's very unlikely that Charles III will be made to vacate the throne, but you never know. After all, it wasn't so long ago that a king was forced to do exactly that, for being a Nazi sympathiser, namely Edward VIII in 1936.

The easiest way is to donate half a million quid to whichever party wins the next general election. And why stop there? Think big, and go for a lordship or something.Alexiev wrote: ↑Tue Jul 15, 2025 4:48 amCan Americans buy knighthoods? How much do they cost? I believe Americans can be given honorary knighthoods, but you have to be a British or Commonwealth citizen to call yourself Sir (or Dame).

Darn it! What's the point of being knighted if you can’t call yourself "sir".Maia wrote: ↑Tue Jul 15, 2025 6:30 amThe easiest way is to donate half a million quid to whichever party wins the next general election. I guess I'll have to win my spurs on the battlefield, like Roland or Ogier. My errantry is more likely to resemble Don Quixote's, unless, like Roland. I go mad and have to get Astolpho (a Brit, by the way) to ride Pegasus to the moon and retrieve my wits from the jar in which they reside.

Worthy recipients of knighthoods include Sir Jimmy Savile OBE, and Sir Keir Starmer himself, though, man of the people that he is, he doesn't use it much.

I've never been able to get past the billowingly fat (girdle-bursting) ego of any farting/belching human who actually believes that they are worthy of being called "Your Majesty."

"It's a little bit funny"
Maia's so hot when she's witty. That one time when she came into a thread and said, "I don't see what the problem is." Omg, I melted.

A guy in a debate once said to me "hey buddy, you better respect Maia's views."
I was like "she doesn't have any you fool!"
(thank you, thank you)
