Covered in burdocks

Post by Maia »

Yesterday next door's kid informed me that his football had gone into my back garden, so I spent the next fifteen minutes or so trying to find it, as he was shouting directions to me through the fence. I did eventually find it, thankfully, otherwise I might have been there all day, and as it was, I was already running late for work, only to discover, when I got there, that my socks were completely covered in burdocks. At least that's what I think they're called, those little spore things that stick to your clothes in summer when you walk through overgrown areas, and are a complete pain to get off.

I'm not particularly enjoying this heatwave, I must admit. It's the moot tonight, second Friday in the month, but I really don't fancy going, and probably won't.

The 'hitchhiker' seed. I've sat many an hour picking those things off me after hunting trips. Whole armies of them on my pant leg. And try as you might to avoid them while trudging through the woods they seemingly come out of nowhere like ninjas. I still have no idea which plant not to brush when i walk by.

I've just learned that this seed inspired the invention of velcro.

I should have checked before going out. I could have at least changed my socks. It's probably the heat. It's been 30 degrees today.

In First World countries, it is generally ill-advised to venture from one's dwelling wearing only socks (and sunglasses) even if it's just to go to the mailbox.

Oh wait, I read that wrong. You were dressed when you went for the ball and then later found them on your socks.

Well, in this sort of heat...

It was my work uniform. Long socks.

At least you weren't covered in bullocks. It would be really weird for a female to come to work covered in bullocks.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I'm a very bad man.

Yeah, I see they're activating the "heat protocol" at Wimbledon. Anyway, sounds like it's a good idea to weed the garden.

I weeded the front garden a few months ago but I've just left the back to grow wild, like a forest.

I get it. I haven't weeded the back for two years, ostensibly because of shoulder surgery, though it's resembling "vacant lot" more than "forest".
