We only know reality by what we understand, how and what we understand is our reality.
"Our reality" is shorthand for: "our interpretation (or understanding) of reality". That is, actual reality exists in your absence.

What am I aware of?
The unknown, the absence that is, holds many truths both beautiful and terrifying, calming and mind-rending. Many people fear this unknown, this absence, out of fear of loss of what they already know when in reality it may be one of the few things that clarifies it and in some cases even provides justification.
