I understand your aversion to personification, especially as many of my Humanist friends had the same aversion possibly for the same reason.

By cosmos I mean 'the all', everything, which, of course, is matter with its energy attributes, fields, qualia, as intimated by Carl Sagan, and the ancients.

Personification as metaphor is fine, and Gaia works for that. God can, à la Einstein's God doesn't play dice. God the Father is useless as metaphor.
