yes, reproductive traits, in both sexes/genders, have multiple applications.
The primary one, if successful, gives rise to secondary uses.
Have you noticed these days the woke use of the word gender to describe the idiosyncratic behaviors of individuals who are one sex, or the other sex.
The word gender is used in place of the word sex because when gender is used as a verb*, even in these days of multi-functional f-bombs raining down from media and entertainment the word gender generally doesn’t get the same
reactions as sex the verb, however that cultural prudence is fading along with the fading, rich vocabulary that more specifically describes what the f-bombs try to implicitly describe, sometimes successfully.
The reason why all men don’t need the dress-wearing statement of identity, is the same reason why one individual does not exhibit every possible human self-concept.
In other words, gender variation beyond the two genders that correlate with the two sexes, is actually describing idiosyncratic behavior of one of the two, but elevated to the separate concept of gender when self-concept hinges on behavior.
