True, but do computers EVER feel pain? And how can we determine what is a feeling of pain and what is merely programmed behavior by a computer? The point I'm trying to make is that the jury is arguably still out on whether there is a fundamental difference between humans and computers. From my understanding, computers may or may not be able to have experience. I don't know how to tell the difference between real pain in something else and behavior in something else that mimics what I do when I feel real pain. Therefore, since I cannot tell what is real pain in something else and what is not, I can't seem to know if a computer can be programmed to "feel" pain or not.Skepdick wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 9:57 amIf there's any difference then what is it?Gary Childress wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 9:39 am But does the cooling increase take place because the computer feels pain? Or is it no different than a robotic arm that is connected to a thermostat to trigger levers and what not to remove it's arm from a heat source that would destroy the arm? Presumably there's something different between a mechanical device that is rigged deterministically to remove itself from destruction verses a human being who removes himself or herself from destruction out of pain.
There's a medical condition which makes one insensitive to pain. So when a certain part of your brain/hardware is turned off - you don't feel pain either.

Well, do you "feel pain"? Or is it just a physiological trigger drawing your attention to a particular sense?Gary Childress wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 10:07 am True, but do computers EVER feel pain? How do you explain ghost pains in amputees? It's not physiological - it's just your brain playing tricks on you.
This mode of discourse doesn't lead anywhere useful. You get trapped in the language games over and over.

Yes. I feel pain at times. Do you?Skepdick wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 10:33 amWell, do you "feel pain"? I don't know if a computer can feel pain or not. As far as phantom limb pains and such, I don't know how to accurately explain them.
As far as being useful discourse, I don't know that it isn't useful. It may indeed be useful to distinguish between human pain and pain behavior mimicked by a computer. One is real pain and the other is a black box that we can't see. Or maybe we should treat all pain behavior (even in computers) as real pain? That's a possibility also, I suppose.
Re: Is there such a thing as AI?
Yes. Pain is what you call it, what is "it" that you are feeling?

I forgot to mention re those meds I am attempting to persuade you to stop using. There was this younger fella I hadn't seen for ages from UNI a couple of years ago and he wanted to catch a movie. So we went and my GOD was he gone. He was diagnosed schizo years ago and we had already talked about it. I found him interesting cos I wanted to work out whether it was GOD screwing his reality (as it was for me) or if he was actually mentally skitzed (like u maybe) - turns out, he had no belief in GOD and couldn't really explain it, but a bit paranoia seems. He never does drugs or alcohol and drinks lots of sugar soda stuff and caffeine - so, ya wot an idiot. When I saw him he could barely talk - he was nothing like when I first met him. Yeah, those drugs make you a vegetable and when he was telling me about his diet - all the sugar, caffeine etc..oh yeah he drinks loads of water too - way too much. I wasn't surprised his brain was screwy.
So.
My advice to him was basically the dietary thing, and start easing off the meds.

Years ago when I was in the middle of GOD crap I had this dream that I was pinned down to the floorboards with these 'goth' blokes holding my arms pinned to the floor and I couldn't get up as another goth walked around me starting down at me. I soon awoke from it tho. (At the time, I used to go to this club called The Proscenium - a goth club - awesome music and the living dead lol. -the club had wooden floorboards, as does my house- ne way)
I won't tell you what my worst type of nightmares are..GOD can be a right p**** at times.
OMG, you can't even say p****!
I pricked my finger with a pin..
LMAO
I felt a p**** upon my finger..

The dream was vague and strange but when I woke up this morning, I came to the realization that I have been no less cruel or uncaring toward others at times than they have been cruel or uncaring toward me at times.attofishpi wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 2:29 pmDo tell!Gary Childress wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 2:23 pmI'm OK. Precisely. We make each other who we are. I'm never going to see my father again after he made it clear that he hates me and I am a c^nt, whereas the truth to it is polar opposite, and he is everything he called me.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 2:54 pm The dream was vague and strange but when I woke up this morning, I came to the realization that I have been no less cruel or uncaring toward others at times than they have been cruel or uncaring toward me at times.
WHO CARES!!
Mate, you live in lovely USA - there's loads to do over there, it's like Australia on steroids. Maybe you should move to somewhere more scenic than Florida, somewhere with walking trails and a cooler climate. I had a piss up with a bunch of lads from Colorado Dec 1999 at an airport bar in NY. I was trying to get rid of lots of green funny paper money prior to heading to UK and doing it in one of my favourite ways, beer.
These guys were loads of fun, they didn't all know each other but we were all getting rather fuzzy wuzzy. One of them grew loads of weed! Anyway, all of a sudden they all realised the time and scooby'd out of the bar to get their plane to Denver I think..about 15 mins later they were all back buying beers with me cos they missed their flight!! They did not give much of a hoot. Good lads those Colorado dudes. Nice scenery over there. I've watched so many u-tubers hiking in various parts of the US, lovely trails for camping etc.. Personally, I didn't think much of Florida (at least the tiny bit I saw, it aint my thang)
Don't just accept wot those shrinks keep prescribing mate - they do knock the personality out of ya, make u dull and pointless - if they prescribe 10mg, take 5 (but keep the 10mg prescriptions) - then take 2.5mg and do lots of walking, lose some wait, eat healthy food and BINGO!! Gazza will be back, ready for the next adventure..ready to meet a few ladies etc etc..
Do you cook for yourself?
