Re: American Elections and other falderal...
Speaking of "hooey", job #1: get rid of the Electoral college.

Re: American Elections and other falderal...
Why?
As I say...
The Electoral College, apart from its origins, is a fine way to assert state sovereignty. It ought not be discarded, only revamped.
Each state gets ONE electoral vote. The popular vote of the state determines which presidential candidate gets that one electoral vote. If, for example, the simple majority in my state, Louisiana, pick RED MAN DEFIANT, then he gets our one electoral vote, and if the simple majority of California picks the café au lait whore, then she gets their one electoral vote. 26 or better wins the office. In an unlikely 25 - 25 split, Congress, house and senate, convenes and votes (just as outlined at this post's beginning). 243 or better wins Congress's one, tie-breakin', electoral vote.
Re: American Elections and other falderal...
The Democrats once again self-immolated. Trump harped endlessly about inflation (which is bad in recent years). But expelling immigrants and imposing tariffs is surely going to make it worse. In addition, the Dems could have pointed out that capitalist governments cannot control prices like communist governments can.henry quirk wrote: ↑Tue Nov 12, 2024 1:03 amShould those of like-mind organize themselves as they like? Sure.Shouldn't we the people have the ability to decide what proper functions comprise?
Why the Dems dropped the ball on this one remains a mystery, although unsurprising given their incompetence.

Re: American Elections and other falderal...
I wouldn't worry much except that Trump seems to be such a vindictive, egomaniacal autocrat. His victory has emboldened equally nauseating racists and sexists, and spawned internet memes such as, "Your body, our choice", and "Now you can go back to picking cotton." Worse than a Trump term is the fact (that we Americans must now face) that so many of our compatriots are racist and sexist.henry quirk wrote: ↑Tue Nov 12, 2024 8:18 pmI wouldn't worry too much about democrat failure: Repubs will mostly surely snatch defeat from the jaws of victory (it's what they excel at).
Autocracy has this appeal: it's easy. Democracy is hard. One must take responsibility. The Medicis (for some bizarre reason) have become the heroes of the Florentine Renaissance; Savonarola the villain. I support the latter.

don't worry, the followers of "Hitler" will not be rounding all democrats up and putting them in execution camps
undoing taxes and regulations to give more freedom to Americans and their businesses will cause enough wailing and gnashing of teeth by the left...
besides, Persia is busy starting more wars

Since when do mass deportations and increased tariffs "give more freedom" to anyone? Tariffs clearly restrict one's freedom to buy things inexpensively. Or perhaps you don't support capitalism and free enterprise.Impenitent wrote: ↑Tue Nov 12, 2024 10:01 pm don't worry, the followers of "Hitler" will not be rounding all democrats up and putting them in execution camps

Blah, blah, blah said someone peddling a platform that a minority of voters support, who benefits from an anachronism from the 18th century before modern urban areas were invented.henry quirk wrote: ↑Tue Nov 12, 2024 1:55 pmWhy?

Inflation has been high everywhere in the world, and as a result the incumbent party has been badly mauled in every election in the world in 2024. Sometimes American exceptionalism ends up looking exactly the same as following the crowd would have.Alexiev wrote: ↑Tue Nov 12, 2024 6:13 pmThe Democrats once again self-immolated. All that Trump technically needs to do for the next few years in order to be one of those lucky presidents who inherits a good economy to fluff his reputation with is just not fuck it up by doing anything to trigger a new inflationary spiral of some sort. Trade wars for instance. Or trying to replace income taxes with tariffs. Or making millions of public sector employees redundant.
Just don't do anything stupid like that and he gets to be a 'good economy president' for free because all the work has already been done. Unemployment is around the technical minimum, hovering barely above frictional rate. On top of that, Biden is gifting him a booming stock market, and inflation is falling anyway.

no, tariffs clearly restrict purchasing foreign goods, you don't want to pay a tariff? buy American made.

Re: American Elections and other falderal...
I would buy American-made, but once we kick out immigrants, prices will skyrocket and I won't be able to afford it. Or, more likely. American workers with less money than I won't be able to.Impenitent wrote: ↑Wed Nov 13, 2024 12:10 am

Exactly. Inflation generally accompanies a booming economy. Why the Dems didn't emphasize the positives is inexplicable.FlashDangerpants wrote: ↑Tue Nov 12, 2024 11:41 pm

"Just don't do anything stupid"? That seems like we're asking too much.
