That was quite good. Reminded me of Sally Oldfield's Songs of the Quendi, in fact.promethean75 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 27, 2024 11:28 am Check out this prog-rock band from Canterbury. And if any of you happen to like this stuff and decide to go off on your own and start listening to National Health, DO NOT listen to Squarer For Maud until i tell you you are ready.

Well I can't listen to stuff like Jacqui McShee because it makes me cry. It's so honest and pure and sincere and beautiful that I can't handle it.

Hi Maia, I'm surprised to hear someone mention Pentangle.Maia wrote: ↑Sun Oct 27, 2024 10:46 am Yes, there's definitely a lot of good music from that time. I particularly like the Moody Blues, for example, who I kept asking for on Friday, which no one complained about, not least, I suppose, because they were a local band. Local, that is, to my afore-not-mentioned home city. Their classic seven albums straddled the late '60s and early '70s, which was also the era of the folk rock bands, including Pentangle, who I really like, and Steeleye Span, to name just two. Pentangle are really good because they often recorded real traditional folk songs, such as Willy O' Winsbury. Just listen, for example, to Jacqui McShee's voice, on this.

It's a bit tingly, isn't it?
Back in 1969, my best friend turned me on to their beautiful music. I don't remember what I did with my meager collection of albums, but I'm pretty sure I had one of their first albums. I think it was the one that had this image...
...on its cover.
To me, Jacqui McShee's singing style and vocal tone was (is) absolutely perfect for those old English folksy songs.
And I can't remember if it was Bert Jansch or John Renbourn (the two guitarists/vocalists) who allegedly said, "I'm just in it for the beer."

They're truly beautiful, aren't they? Here's an earlier one of theirs, Let No Man Steal Your Thyme, from their first album.seeds wrote: ↑Sun Oct 27, 2024 6:00 pmHi Maia, I'm surprised to hear someone mention Pentangle.Maia wrote: ↑Sun Oct 27, 2024 10:46 am Yes, there's definitely a lot of good music from that time. Maia isn't old enough and you, me old China, aren't British enough to know that Pentangle got their big break when 'Night Flight" was used as the theme tune for a BBC series, Take Three Girls. This was in the days when there were only three TV channels, one of which, BBC2, was watched by about four people. So roughly half the population had Pentangle beamed into their living rooms once a week.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsMm0wxpaRc (Got that song mixed up with Jethro Tull's 'Living in the Past' for years. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tn9IyFLDtjk Mind you, the flute's a bit of a giveaway. And the fact that Ian Anderson isn't Jacqui McShee. OK it seems obvious now, but I was very young!)

Jethro Tull are really good too. I saw them live here in the states just after the release of Aqualung.
I'll never forget watching Ian Anderson toss his flute 20 feet into the air as it spun like a baton, sparkling in the stage lights and then caught by him in perfect timing to continue where he left off on his solo.
Dang, I miss my youthful days

Just do it slower. Works for me. Anyhoo, here's one that you and Maia might enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwFXUmVbsYI

Very nice, I hadn't heard of those before. Here's another favourite of mine, Gypsy, by the Moody Blues. Will Bouwman wrote: ↑Sun Oct 27, 2024 7:50 pmJust do it slower. Works for me. Anyhoo, here's one that you and Maia might enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwFXUmVbsYI

Furthermore, we all seem to be kindred spirits here, for very few groups can match the greatness of the Moody Blues,
Not meaning to turn this into another "what's your favorite music" thread, but seeing how you seem to like the old stuff, have you ever listened to Joni Mitchell's very first album, "Song to a Seagull"?
I think you might like it, Maia...

It's very nice on the ears but not the sort of music that does much for me..
