In 1563, during the Council of Trente, by means of the Tametsi decree, the Church grabbed control over customary marriage and made marriage subject to their permission. Henceforth, marriage had to be conducted in the building of the church and authorized by a priest who would preside over it. The customary marriage, traditionally held at the house of the bride, therefore became forbidden onto members of the church.

Can you explain to me why for the long 1563 years since the very beginnings of Christianity, customary marriage was perfectly fine? Can you explain to me on what grounds the Christian clergy suddenly believed that their permission would be needed for marriage?

Concerning conversion to Christianity, why would anybody right in his mind voluntarily give the Christian clergy the power to control his ability to marry whosoever he wishes? I reject, repudiate, reprobate, and utterly condemn the Christian clergy's ambition to exert control over marriage.

((By the way, the original reason why the church introduced their Tametsi decree was apparently to prevent intermarriage between Catholics and Protestants.))
