NYTs now:
The 20-year-old gunman who attempted to assassinate former President Donald J. Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania lived in a relatively affluent suburb in the hills south of Pittsburgh, about an hour’s drive from the site of the rally.

The neighborhood in Bethel Park where the shooter, identified by the F.B.I. as Thomas Matthew Crooks, grew up is “pretty firmly middle class, maybe upper-middle class,” Dan Grzybek, who represents the area on the county council, said in an interview on Sunday.

Mr. Grzybek briefly met the gunman’s parents last year when he was canvassing for his run. He did not recall the exact conversation, but he remembered they seemed pleasant and were open to hear his platform.

The gunman was a registered Republican, his mother was a Democrat and his father a Libertarian, a fairly typical mix for the area, Mr. Grzybek said.

“You’ve got a large spattering of different backgrounds and ideals, and definitely have a lot of mixed households in Bethel Park,” he said.

Former F.B.I. officials said the bureau’s behavioral analysis unit would try to build out a profile of the gunman to understand his motivations and why he decided to carry out the attempted assassination. The F.B.I., which is running the investigation, will cast a wide net, interviewing friends and family members and scouring the internet for clues he might have left online or in a journal.

“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” the F.B.I. said in a statement early Sunday.

The gunman did not have a criminal history reflected in Pennsylvania’s public court records, and officials said they had not identified a motive. A voter-registration record showed Mr. Crooks’s Republican registration, though federal campaign-finance records show he donated $15 to the Progressive Turnout Project, a liberal voter turnout group, through the Democratic donation platform ActBlue in January 2021.

Law enforcement officers closed down all roads leading toward the home of the suspect’s family in Bethel Park. Numerous relatives did not respond to messages seeking comment.

Mr. Grzybek, who lives about a half-mile down the same street as the gunman’s family, said the area was in shock.

“Most people just can’t believe that this has happened in our neighborhood,” he said. “I typically walk my dogs every morning, and the number of people that I’ve seen walking through our street, just driving down and just stopping to take video and pictures, I think is pretty remarkable.”

Mr. Crooks was killed by Secret Service agents after he fired from “an elevated position” outside the outdoor rally venue where Mr. Trump was speaking, according to the Secret Service. Law enforcement officials recovered an AR-15-type semiautomatic rifle near the body of a white man they believe was the gunman, according to two law enforcement officials.

Mr. Crooks appears to have graduated in 2022 from Bethel Park High School, which has about 1,400 students, and received a $500 “star award” that year from the National Math and Science Initiative, according to The Tribune-Review in western Pennsylvania.

In an online recording of the 2022 graduation ceremony, Mr. Crooks can be seen crossing the stage to modest applause after his name is called out, a slender young man with glasses in a black graduation gown who briefly posed with a school official and accepted his diploma.

Here is Thomas Crook in a Blackrock video.

At least, it sure looks like him, especially in profile
3 seconds in, then 18 seconds in.
It's the high school he attended.

NYTimes has clever writers. “Mister” is a mild and yet undeserved honorific for Assassin Crooks who murdered and maimed while intent on putting Trump in the bulls-eye (but not the cross hairs!) as the media culture taught him for the past nine years, since he was eleven years old.

Too funny!

The pearl clutching after Donald trump suggested some "second amendment people" take care of Hillary Clinton, after he made fun of Nancy pelosi and her husband after he was attacked by a lunatic with a hammer...

Too funny.

Biden was having a flashback to when Sarah Palin used the word "cross-hairs," and from this was accused of caused Gabby Gifford to be shot in Arizona while campaigning. No one said that Biden used the word cross-hairs. You should find this hysterically funny, given your take on the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.

It's kind of like Obama telling Christians to get off their high horse after other Christians are slaughtered.

XD yeah, I find the pearl clutching from republicans very funny - after a republican shot at another republican. I love that these fools to straight to "how is this Bidens fault?"

Maybe the republican tyrant promoting political violence for years is to blame... maybe

So, Trump himself is to blame for being shot.

That didn't take long.

Yeah lmao, I'm not gonna accept any victim whining from that idiot or his goons after he encouraged and cheered on so much violence himself. Fuck his ear.

You must mean like the riots after he was sworn into office in protest to his existence, where folks were killed and maimed. Then in the summer of 2020 leading up to his second run at office, you must mean the organized riots of the Left. Nothing like chaos before an election, and an assassination in the summer before this election would accomplish that. What's that Alinsky Rule of the Left? Something about using the chaos of every disaster to push through societal controls that would be rejected as proposed legislation.

It's not about Trump. It's about The Executive Branch. Obviously your analysis puts Trump in the crosshairs based on looking to the Cult of Personality rather than the danger to the country and its institutions that are required for a representative republic to properly function.

It just so happens that Trump is demonstrably not an idiot, but that's not the issue.

Who knows … after the trauma of a bullet whizzing past his head that sounded like the world’s biggest mosquito, and in the spirit of unity being urged by The Democrats Who Hate America after years of thinking that unity means War Rooming against The Deplorables and their representatives … in his speech tonight Trump may say something to the effect of:

No matter what they do to me or say about me, I will never ever again say anything mean and nasty about anyone or anything. No more Sleepy Joe, Crazy Nancy, or Little Marco talk, because it makes folks feel ever so bad.

Trump: encourages and celebrates violence
Reasonable people: he shouldn't do that
Ass hats: awww you don't want him to say mean things?

Maybe suggesting someone shoots Hillary Clinton, celebrating the attack at Pelosis house, and cheering on those Texas mother fuckers who tried to drive a Biden bus off the road, aren't good things to do.

No republican who whines about "oh look how bad the rhetoric on the left is! Biden said bullseye! Wahhh" should be taken seriously.
