Remember Me Problem

Post by Consul »

I've been having a technical problem for a while: When I log in, I always click on Remember Me; but now it happens more and more often that the forum software doesn't remember me. When I write a post and click on Preview or Submit, I often have to log in again. Even worse, my text is then gone, so I have to rewrite or insert it (if copied before).

I think everyone's having that problem. Sometimes I get 'logged out' in the middle of writing a comment

Around a month and a half ago, the forum was apparently being overrun with hundreds of bots (1500 to 2,000) that were causing the entire PN site to slow down to the point of being unusable. The owners were trying anything and everything to solve the problem.

Here's something I posted in the thread titled: "Slow Connection or Slow Server?"
seeds wrote: Sun May 05, 2024 10:44 pm Rick and Bora are trying to come up with a solution to the slowdown that, apparently, a huge number of bots were causing by accessing the forum.

I'm guessing that the quick log-off (which seems to have fixed the slowdown problem) is part of that (temporary?) solution.

Just be glad that the site is still up for us to enjoy.

For now, just always remember to copy your post before hitting preview or submit so that you can paste it back in after signing back in.

If it's a long post, I personally have the site opened on a separate page and always sign-in there before previewing or submitting the post I am working on. And don't be fooled if that page says you're still signed in. Refresh the page to see for sure.

Again, just be glad (and thankful) that they make this ad-free site available to us.

I am, but I hope the price for a successful anti-bot fight is not a permanent log-in/log-out ping-pong.

Happened to me too the other day. Sorry about this.

Seeds is right - this is the result of one of our attempts to fix the slowdown problem caused by all the bots. However, this attempt (as I recall) didn't work. Instead Bora fixed the problem by hiring space on another server and moving the forum there so it was no longer on the same server as the rest of the Philosophy Now website (philosophynow.org). However, maybe this means we can now slacken off some of the other measures that we tried earlier, such as the automatic logging off. Bora is away at the moment but I'll ask him when he comes back.
