Introduction

Post by cgill »

Philosophy Now is carrying my cartoon sketches, from time to time: 'cgill'. I am a student of philosophy, having completed a Masters back in the early sixties. So that dates me, doesn't it. I am enjoying the advanced years, because I can read, write, and draw at my leisure, having grandchildren in mind as my captive readers! When you do cartoon work, you don't get feedback, so, unaccustomed as I am to blogs, I am going to tune in to PN blogging, for any comments on cartoon items, as well as for the views of others on philosophical matters, and perhaps to make written offerings. Am writing an essay with philosophical reflections on Art, just now, and decided to take as subject matter art work done 33,000 years ago, and found in the nineties in Chauvet Cave, in France. The art is unencumbered, and astonishing. Look forward to becoming engaged, a bit, with blogging.

Hi cgill!

Welcome to the forum! It is so nice to have an actual artist from the pages of Philosophy Now. I have seen your cartoons and I absolutely love them! They are ultra unique...like nothing I have seen before.

Sorry for taking so long to welcome you, every time I was going to say "hi" to you...I forgot and logged out!

Anyway, I look forward to your participation!

What a nice welcome, Artistic Solution. As a further step of introduction, but without presuming any huge waves of interest (I live by the sea), I issue an invitation: visit and see what you philosophers or students thereof think of www.cgillcartoons.ca, where, as well as a bit of philosophical reflection, you will find lots of domesticata. Lots. And anti- technology. And pro-nature. And aging subject matter.

Hi cgill,

I took a look at your website and I am still looking around...you are right there is lots to see! I am still going through them.

I laughed out loud when I came to the one with the woman standing by the table while the man is on his hands and knees looking under the table, that said, "Hold on, dear, I haven't decided what you are to look for..." I love the body language! It reminds me of a boyfriend I once had who was teaching me to skip stones on the lake. When he threw this particularly pretty one in, I exclaimed, "Oh no! I wanted to save that one!" So he waded into the lake and dove under (clothes still on) and picked up a rock, then came up to the surface yelling, "Is this the one?!" I was laughing so hard as he kept trying to find the right stone, tossing them back in every time I said 'no' and then bringing up a new one for my perusal. His expression was priceless after discarding one on my command, when I paused undecided, and said, "Oh wait...that last one might have been it! Could you find it again?"

How did you become so confident in your artistic talent in order to be "loose" in your style?

Also, thank you for mentioning the Chauvet cave! I googled it. So beautiful! It's amazing how much it looks like art that is still done today. Someday I will have to visit.
